Timely Animated Child Refugee Short ‘More Than I Remember’ to Premiere at SXSW: Watch Trailer (Exclusive)
Image
“More Than I Remember,” an animated short directed by Amy Bench and designed by Maya Edelman — who was born in Kiyv and came to the U.S. at 13 as a refugee — is having its premiere Friday at the SXSW fest in Austin.

The timely pic, which delves into humanitarian and refugee issues, particularly as they relate to minors fleeing conflict, is set in southeastern Congo where militia attacks on the Banyamulenge, a persecuted minority, have led to the destruction of hundreds of villages and the displacement of over 200,000 people.

It’s the story of a 14-year-old named Mugeni who, after waking up to the sounds of bombs, finds herself completely alone since her family has scattered to the surrounding forests, inadvertently leaving her behind. She then sets out on a solo journey across the planet.

As a result of the genocide, many Banyamulenge have ended up as refugees in neighboring...

Bad Kids Of Crestview Academy Review
You all remember 2012’s comic adaptation of Bad Kids Go To Hell, right? Probably not. Most seem to have missed Matthew Spradlin’s under-the-radar private school thriller, but – nevertheless – Ben Browder makes his directorial debut with the film’s follow-up sequel, Bad Kids Of Crestview Academy. Once again, a handful of rebellious, not-so-angelic students find themselves serving a deadly detention sentence where anything goes. Sex, drugs and adorable kitten videos – these kids are anarchists to the core, soaked in spoiled-teens-so-rotten-you-want-them-dead appeal. Welcome back to creator Barry Wernick’s educational house of horrors, just don’t mind the stripped-down nature of this barebones continuation.

Sammi Hanratty stars as Siouxsie Hess, a Crestview student seeking vengeance after the death of her sister Alyson (Ashlyn McEvers). Not too long ago, the academy held a party where Siouxsie’s sister supposedly committed suicide. A handful of students corroborated the same story, all of whom...

SXSW Review: When Angels Sing

There are a few classic holiday films we like to pull out each year in addition to the Rankin/Bass Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and Frosty the Snowman, such as A Christmas Carol, It's a Wonderful Life and the more modern A Christmas Story. A common thread between these films that has helped make them annual favorites is that they don't focus on the religious or ritual aspects of the holiday, but instead on it as a time for homecomings and shared memories with family and loved ones, friends and neighbors. Soon to join those ranks is When Angels Sing, the adaptation of a Turk Pipkin story by director Tim McCanlies and writer Lou Berney.

Easily the best Christmas movie since 1983's A Christmas Story, When Angels Sing was shot in Austin and features a Who's Who of talent with Texas ties. Stars Harry Connick Jr. and Connie Britton (Friday Night Lights...

The fest, which takes place every spring in Austin, Texas, began in 1987, and has continued to grow in size every year. The fest announced the first wave of films back in early January, and the lineup included some highly anticipated films such as The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, Evil Dead, Downloaded and Spring Breakers. Now the full lineup has been announced, and it just might be one of the best lineups the festival has ever programmed.

SXSW takes place March 8-16 in Austin Texas. Here are just some of the films we are excited about.

Narrative Feature Competition – This year’s 8 films were selected from 1,191 submissions. Each film is a World Premiere.

Exclusive: Judd Nelson Honors The Breakfast Club with Bad Kids Go to Hell
Judd Nelson
Judd Nelson talks about portraying the authoritative Headmaster Nash in Bad Kids Go to Hell, debuting in theaters December 7

It's been nearly 30 years since the 1984 classic The Breakfast Club found The Brat Pack stuck in detention. This weekend, John Bender himself, Judd Nelson, hands out the punishment as Headmaster Nash in Bad Kids Go to Hell, arriving in theaters December 7.

Director Matthew Spradlin's horror comedy is set at the elite Crestview Academy prep school, where six kids from vastly different backgrounds are forced to spend their Saturday in detention. The plot thickens in devious ways when these kids are killed one by one, making them believe that this library may be haunted after all. I recently had the chance to speak with Judd Nelson about this indie comedy. Here's what he had to say.

I read that you attended a prep school yourself. Obviously it was a much different time,...

Robert Davi
Being an Auteur
Robert Davi
Though Robert Davi is identified with mega-bad guys in such flicks as The Goonies, Die Hard, and Licence to Kill, he has also played an array of characters in more than 60 movies and TV programs. In part, Davi blames the press for perpetrating the image of him as archetypical villain, "instead of calling me an actor's actor," he says. "No one looks at your body of work." What makes it so much fun to play Danny, a former doo-wop singer down on his luck, in Davi's latest project, The Dukes, "is that he's a regular guy," emphasizes the Queens-born actor. "Also, I get the chance to play a singer. I interjected singing in Goonies, but here I'm playing a singer." A trained opera singer, Davi pauses to point out, "And I have a chance to be raw. A friend who saw the movie says this is the most he's ever seen of Robert Davi onscreen.

"The Dukes" Review. Full of heart and highly recommended
The Dukesby Peter Dimako, Editor Cavu Pictures , Sun Lion Films and Doo Wop Productions’ “The Dukes” sings a fine tune. Robert Davi makes his directorial debut on “The Dukes,” a comedic indie which one just can’t help loving. Davi, loved for his roles on many a film and TV offering including “The Goonies,” “Predator 2” and “Stargate Atlantis,” writes this work alongside James Andronica (“The November Men”). The story is easy to follow, focusing on a former doo wop band known as “The Dukes” consisting of George Zucco (Chazz Palminteri ) and Danny Pasquale (Robert Davi). They may have had the crowds roaring at The Brooklyn Paramount as the number one group in America but now in their ripe age, are shadows of their former selves. Their agent Lou (Peter Bogdanovich) tries to secure them any type of gig for them in order to keep them paying the bills. This...

Indie Film Focus: Robert Davi's "The Dukes." Gallery within.
Let's have a look at "The Dukes," an indie dramedy which marks the directorial debut of Robert Davi. Cavu Releasing sends this one out to first have its premiere in New York City on November 14th followed by an expansion the week after.   Davi, known for his roles in unforgetable releases including one two of our most favorite films found in "The Goonies" and "Die Hard," also writes along with James Andronica (writer of "Men") and stars in the film beside Chazz Palminteri and Peter Bogdanovich. What's this about?  The Dukes is the wry comic tale of a down-and-out Doo Wop band tho takes a bumbling detour into burglary in their endless quest to make good on their dreams.  The film is a rollicking caper that is also deeply candid about life, love, friendship and the heart it takes to keep on struggling to find meaning and connection as life...
