Why haven’t the Coen Brothers worked together for seven years?
“He borrowed the lawnmower, brought it back and never cleaned the blades. This is bullsh*t!” jokes Ethan Coen. Joel and Ethan Coen’s last movie together was the Netflix multi-story feature, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, which for the latter was an epic project to shoot up there with the scope of True Grit and No Country for Old Men.
Actually, life is what happens when two brothers are making their own projects, separately. Whatever problems "The Fantastic Four: First Steps" has with its portrayal of Galactus, none of them come from his actor Ralph Ineson. While Ineson's appearance is completely concealed inside Galactus' armor, his greatest strength as an actor is his deep, Yorkshire accented voice. That voice sounds like it should be coming out of a wrathful cosmic god like Galactus.
Ineson has been working as an on-camera actor since 1993, but he's had a career renaissance in the last decade. Before that, he was part of the cast in the U.K. version of "The Office" as Chris Finch (the counterpart to David Koechner's Todd Packer from the American version). In the late 2000s to early 2010s, he also had minor parts in the "Harry Potter" films (as the Death Eater Amycus Carrow), "Game of Thrones" (the Ironborn Dagmer Cleftjaw), and...

Denzel Washington isn’t just known for his critically acclaimed, award-winning films, but also for several of his Oscar snubs throughout his career. One of his major losses came in 1993 when he was up for Best Actor for his powerful role in Malcolm X, but lost the coveted award to Al Pacino for Scent of a Woman.
For years, fans of the two-time Oscar winner believed this was the biggest loss of his awards journey. But nearly three decades later, an even more painful moment arrived. In 2022, Washington delivered a stunning performance in The Tragedy of Macbeth, earning yet another Best Actor nomination. People were convinced he would finally take home the trophy.
Instead, the Oscar went to Will Smith for King Richard, in a ceremony that became one of the most talked-about nights in Academy Awards history, following Smith’s infamous slapgate incident.

It’s a battle of old school vs. newish school in an exclusive to Collider sneak peek of the upcoming dark comedy,Honey Don’t! Once again striking out on his own and away from his long-running and recognizable collaborations with his brother, Ethan Coen steps behind the camera to bring the second in what he’s dubbed a lesbian B-movie trilogyfollowing 2024’s Drive-Away Dolls. Reuniting with the director is leading lady, Margaret Qualley (The Substance), who will appear in a totally different role in the second film of the series. This time, she’s joined by Aubrey Plaza (Agatha All Along), Charlie Day (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia), and more in an ode to neo-noir films with a modern queer twist.

Luca Guadagnino is going to be on the road a lot in the coming months. One day after the Italian filmmaker's latest feature, After the Hunt, joined the Venice Film Festival lineup as an out of competition selection, the New York Film Festival announced that the Amazon MGM-released film will play as the opening night selection of its 63rd edition.
"We are excited to open this year’s festival with Luca Guadagnino’s latest, which confirms his status as one of the most versatile risk-takers working today," NYFF artistic director Dennis Lim said in a statement. "Brilliantly acted and crafted, After the Hunt is something rare in contemporary cinema: a complex, grown-up movie with a lot on its mind that also happens to be a deeply satisfying piece of entertainment."
In his own statement, Guadagnino called NYFF "an arbiter of global cinema," and provided a quick preview of the movie's themes.

Luca Guadagnino’s “After the Hunt” will kick off the 63rd New York Film Festival as its opening night feature.
The film boasts an all-star cast led by Julia Roberts in a story about the impact of an alleged sexual assault on an Ivy League campus. Michael Stuhlbarg, Ayo Edebiri, Chloë Sevigny and Andrew Garfield co-star in “After the Hunt,” which Amazon MGM Studios backed. Nora Garrett wrote the screenplay.
Previous opening night films at the festival have included Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman,” Joel Coen’s “The Tragedy of Macbeth” and Todd Haynes’ “May December.” RaMell Ross’s “Nickle Boys” opened last year’s edition.
Billed as the film’s North American premiere, “After the Hunt” will return Guadagnino to the festival, a place where he previously screened “Call Me by Your Name” and “Queer.” “After the Hunt” will screen at Alice Tully Hall on Friday, September 26, with Guadagnino...

Denzel Washington’s new movie is getting closer by the day, but ahead of its debut in theaters, one of the more recent films from the two-time Oscar winner has found sustained streaming success. Washington stars alongside Brendan Gleeson and Frances McDormand in The Tragedy of Macbeth, the 2021 period thriller following a Scottish lord who becomes convinced that he will be the next King of Scotland, and his ambitious wife who supports his every move. The Tragedy of Macbeth is currently streaming on Apple TV+, and the film is still charting in the top 10 in several countries, such as Mongolia and Nicaragua. It earned a “certified fresh” 93% from critics and 74% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, but it grossed less than $1 million at the box office during an extremely limited theatrical release.
During a 2022 interview with Collider, Washington described The Tragedy of Macbeth as the “most mature work” of his career.

Movies about characters who believe in the philosophy that you can fake it till you make it are a dime a dozen. For example, there’s Joel Coen’s The Hudsucker Proxy, which is about a low-level clerk who becomes the CEO of a manufacturing company because its board of directors wants to tank its stocks, but he ends up making the establishment a huge success. Chandra Barot’s Don has a street musician named Vijay who is hired by Dsp D’Silva, because he looks exactly like the titular gangster, to infiltrate Don’s gang. But when D’Silva dies, Vijay has to find a way to prove he isn’t the real deal. Richard Linklater’s Hit Man has a professor of psychology pretending to be a hitman to weed out people who want to kill off someone, but he eventually gets too involved with a “client,” thereby prompting...

Alfonso Cuaron looked in pole position to direct the new James Bond film. But a fresh report now suggests otherwise.
Although he was never officially confirmed as the person to lead James Bond into a new era, there were plenty of industry folks who claimed that Alfonso Cuaron was a dead certain to direct the first James Bond film since Amazon MGM gained full control of the character. That was following a billion dollar deal with Eon’s Barbara Brocolli.
Cuaron seemingly confimred that he was in discussions with David Heyman and Amy Pascal – the film’s producers – and that he was keen to do it, reportedly stating at a film masterclass in Paris back in April that: “There is indeed this project under discussion, and I have the desire – if it happens – to revisit this story in my own way.”

The Coen Brothers may need to sit Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie down for a heart-to-heart. When you think of Tom Cruise, you probably picture high-octane stunts, intense action, and that signature smile that makes your heart do backflips. Thus, if after Mission: Impossible, Top Gun, and more, you somehow end up watching Ben Stiller’s Tropic Thunder, you are in for a hilarious yet welcome surprise.
In the movie, Tom Cruise ditched his usual leading-man persona for something completely unrecognizable and unforgettable. Playing the eccentric Hollywood producer, Les Grossman, the superstar proved that he can quite literally do anything. While we’d love to see more of Les, we can’t help but wonder if bringing him back would tarnish the legacy.

Think The Bard is boring? If you're one of the millions forced to slog your way through William Shakespeare's plays during high school, you may think his language is too flowery, his style is too dated (despite the fact he wrote in Modern English), and his stories are out-of-touch with our day-to-day lives. Respectfully, dear reader, you are wrong. We bet you have seen and loved a Shakespeare story without even realizing it, as his plays have inspired numerous movies.
We're not talking word-for-word adaptations, like 2015's "Macbeth" starring Michael Fassbender; or even movies that use more...shall we say... "creative license," like Joel Coen's "The Tragedy of Macbeth", Baz Luhrmann's "Romeo + Juliet," or your average theatre director's revisionist steampunk-in-space version of "Cymbeline."
No, Shakespeare has inspired not just adaptations, but inspirations. "Original" movies spanning a host of genres that borrow heavily from The Bard. How heavily?...

Exclusive: Josh O’Connor will star in director Joel Coen’s new film Jack of Spades, which will shoot this summer on location in Scotland, we can reveal.
Details about Jack of Spades are sparse, but the movie continues British-born O’Connor’s phase of working with American directors. He’s recently been in New York shooting Steven Spielberg’s Untitled Amblin Universal Event Film.
Later Friday, O’Connor will ascend the Cannes Film Festival’s red-carpeted steps for the world premiere of Kelly Reichardt’s art heist movie The Mastermind. The actor was allowed time away from filming Spielberg’s sci-fi movie, which stars Emily Blunt, Colman Domingo and Eve Hewson.
O’Connor also features in Wake Up Dead Man for Rian Johnson, the latest Benoit Blanchett tale starring Daniel Craig, and his other picture with an American director at the helm is Max Walker-Silverman’s Rebuilding, which played at Sundance back in January.

Brothers Ethan and Joel Coen have made 18 movies together, starting with 1984’s Blood Simple to 2018’s The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, creating an iconic filmography of black comedy masterpieces.
Then, without warning or explanation, they split up. Joel made The Tragedy of Macbeth (2021), an austere, black-and-white Shakespeare adaptation that felt as far away from a Coen Brothers movie as possible. Ethan’s first solo project, in contrast, was Drive-Away Dolls, the story of two lesbian friends (Geraldine Viswanathan and Margaret Qualley) on the run from dim-bulb thugs after a McGuffinian bag of loot. The queer spin on the Coen-esque crime caper comedy comes in large part from Coen’s co-writer, Tricia Cooke, his longtime editor and wife of 32 years. Cooke is lesbian; the couple have an unconventional marriage where both have separate partners outside their marriage. Coen and Cooke have followed up Drive-Away Dolls with Honey Don’t!, a nutty...

Denzel Washington is one of the most accomplished actors in Hollywood history, and a rare example of a star who has maintained a commitment to challenging roles that showcase his unique talent. He was outstanding in Joel Coen's 2021 expressionist nightmare "The Tragedy of Macbeth" and in a 2016 adaptation of August Wilson's "Fences," which, while it was a flop, remains Denzel's favorite movie role. But we'd all be kidding ourselves if we didn't acknowledge our insatiable appetite for watching Denzel Washington punch and shoot his way through an action movie.
The veteran star has proved his ability to hand out beatdowns even as a 70-year-old with his "Equalizer" trilogy. But Washington also has some lesser-known action outings that, while not quite as viscerally satisfying as his "Equalizer" movies (or Tony Scott's "Man on Fire"), are still a heck of a lot of fun.

James Bond may be heading into bold new territory—with an Oscar-winning director at the helm. During a recent masterclass in Paris, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban director Alfonso Cuarón confirmed he’s in talks to direct the next iteration of the long running Bond franchise, with the 26th film the most important in the series' history — the first since Amazon MGM Studios acquired the creative control to the character. Cuarón told the audience at the Paris Cinema Club:
“There is indeed This project under discussion, and I have the desire — if it happens — to revisit this story in my own way.”
The acclaimed filmmaker’s comments, first shared by X user @Simon___Robert, come as Amazon is seeking to reshape the future of its newly acquired spy franchise. While casting and plot details remain under wraps — obviously, it's all very new and doesn't have a script — industry...

James Bond is one of the most recognizable characters in movie history, and he has been played by some of the most beloved and critically acclaimed actors of their generation. After Daniel Craig's successful run as the 007 agent, Amazon MGM Studios acquired the rights for the franchise and will give a "fresh, exotic" take on the IP.
So far, few details are known about the project. The new James Bond film, which will be the 26th in the franchise, has several directors in the running, including Oscar-winning Harry Potter director Alfonso Cuarón. Scott Rudin has publicly apologized for his “bone-headed” and “narcissistic” behavior as a producer, four years after being effectively canceled in 2021. Rudin, who has won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and 18 Tony Awards, was accused by several former staffers in a June 2021 Hollywood Reporter piece of allegedly abusing them. Details included Rudin allegedly smashing a computer on an assistant’s hand and throwing objects at employees.
After the report, Rudin announced that he would be taking a step back from his projects, including his slated producing credits for five A24 films such as Joel Coen’s “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” The Daniels’ “Everywhere All at Once,” and Alex Garland’s “Men.” Rudin said in 2021 that he was going to “take the time to work on personal issues I should have long ago.”
Now, Rudin is returning to Broadway and “owning” his mistakes. “A lot of what was said was true.

Denzel Washington is clarifying what kind of actor he identifies as. The Oscar winner, who is currently starring alongside Jake Gyllenhaal in Broadway’s “Othello,” said during the “Sunday Morning” show that he does not think of himself as a film star; instead, he is a “stage actor who does film.”
And it’s not that Washington has swapped Hollywood for Broadway, either: The actor pointed to the elusive intangibility of the term itself. “What’s the definition of a Hollywood actor? Myself, I’m from Mt. Vernon. I’m a Mt. Vernon actor,” Washington said. “I don’t know what ‘Hollywood’ means. I know it’s a place.”
When “Sunday Morning” host Bill Whitaker used “film actor” to instead define what it means to be a Hollywood star, Washington then corrected him. “I’m a stage actor who does film. It’s not the other way around,” Washington said.

All Coen Brothers Movies, Ranked: Bowlers deal with blackmailers. Burglars become bunglers. Imperfect crimes fall apart as easily as snow falls from the sky. Kitschiness is found in the most highbrow of places. Those are just some of the motifs that outline the filmography of Joel and Ethan Coen, who have been staking a claim over the American cinematic landscape for close to 40 years. Few filmmakers have been able to simultaneously flaunt their influences and push the medium forward in as exciting of a way as the Coen brothers have. Toying with conventions to the point that they’ve quietly pulled the rug without viewers even noticing, the writer-director siblings have given new meaning to comedy, drama, horror, westerns, film noir, and even musicals. And they’ve done it all without ever going so far as to make the same film twice.

After breaking records on Broadway, Denzel Washington is set to play Othello in a brand new feature film adaptation.
Denzel Washington has already brought us one memorable turn as a doomed Shakespearean hero in recent years, with his take on the ambitious and violent usurper Macbeth in Apple’s The Tragedy Of Macbeth collaborating with director Joel Coen.
However, following a highly successful opening on Broadway which has broken the record for the highest opening week gross ever, it looks as though his stage version of Othello may be making the same transition.
This isn’t entirely new news, given that Washington publicly introduced the idea of playing Othello back in November on The Today Show while out and about promoting Gladiator II. We wondered at the time if that meant that Washington was being lined up to take the title role opposite Daniel Craig in Barbara Broccoli’s planned take on the play,...

Denzel Washington may be bringing his version of “Othello” to the screen.
Washington stars alongside Jake Gyllenhaal in the Broadway play, which has been in previews since February 24. “Othello” opened March 23 and runs through June 8. The play already broke the record for the highest weekly gross ever by earning $2.8 million in its second week. Now, director Kenny Leon is teasing that the historic Shakespeare retelling could lead to a film.
Leon told The Hollywood Reporter that there has “absolutely” been talks with Washington about adapting the play into a feature. Leon previously has collaborated with Washington on two other plays, “A Raisin in the Sun” and “Fences,” which Washington then later directed the film version of. When asked if Gyllenhaal would also potentially reprise his role for an “Othello” film, Leon said, “I would hope so, absolutely, that’s what I would hope would happen.”

There’s no denying Denzel Washington’s magnetism. He carries himself with a swaggering authority enhanced by the natural gravitas of his voice. The two-time Oscar winner is the principal reason audiences are shelling out upwards of $900 to see Kenny Leon’s frustratingly underpowered revival of Othello on Broadway. Playing the Venetian general often disparagingly referred to as “the Moor,” Washington emanates the steely charisma of a man who has risen above casual racism by virtue of his military prowess. But there’s little evidence of a driving force behind his performance, which is symptomatic of the production overall.
Staged on a stately set of distressed classical grandeur designed by Derek McLane, this stylish but shallow modern-dress Othello is set in “The Near Future,” as an opening projection informs us. But that’s as close to an overarching concept as Leon gets.

While speculation over who will play the next James Bond rages on, things are coming together behind the camera for the next and 26th installment in the 007 franchise. Recently, producers David Heyman and Amy Pascal have been eyed to produce the new film, but no official announcements can be made until the paperwork is finished regarding the $1 billion buyout of Barbara Broccoli's Bond rights. The Sun claims that writers have already been hired, but again, there hasn't been an announcement. Likewise, no announcement can be made regarding the director of the next film, but it's said that Edward Berger and Alfonso Cuarón are in the running. Now, Matthew Belloni of Puck said on The Town podcast that he predicts Cuarón will get the gig, which would be his first film in seven years and follow his Apple TV+ series Disclaimer.
"It's an informed, speculative pick," said Belloni. "And it is not Chris Nolan.

When Amazon purchased the legendary Hollywood studio MGM for $8.5 billion back in 2022, they found themselves in the James Bond business, as the Bond franchise was set up at MGM – and they wanted to start making Bond movies as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, creative disagreements between Amazon MGM Studios and producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, who inherited the Bond franchise from original producer Albert R. Broccoli, slowed down the process. So, last month Amazon paid off Wilson and Broccoli (reported price: another $1 billion) so they can gain creative control over the franchise for the foreseeable future. There has been speculation that this could open the door to Bond fan Christopher Nolan finally getting to make a Bond movie, as he demands “final cut” on his films and Nolan getting final cut on a Bond movie was never going to happen under Broccoli’s watch… but Nolan is currently busy...

Bong Joon-ho's first film since his Academy Award-winning film Parasite, Mickey 17, is one of the year's most anticipated films for many. Based on Edward Ashton's novel of the same name, the film follows an unlucky drifter named Mickey (Robert Pattinson) who volunteers to be an "expendable" on a human colony. Being an expendable means taking on dangerous missions with little chance of survival, and Mickey volunteers without knowing the full extent. Each time he dies on a mission, he is cloned. Thus creating multiple versions of himself. Most of the film revolves around the 17th and 18th clones of him (hence the title) and both versions have peculiar accents.

The Coen brothers have made some iconic movies over the years, and one of those is their 5th most highly ranked movie, the 2010 adaptation of Charles Portis’ 1968 novel. True Grit is a Western movie about a young girl seeking to find her father's murderer by a hired hand. It will start streaming on Hulu on March 1.
The film, directed and produced by the Coen brothers, stars Jeff Bridges, Hailee Steinfeld, Matt Damon, and Josh Brolin. Given its realistic perspective on life on the frontier and the bleakness of the region and the time period, it is considered an authentic portrayal of the Wild West.

Mickey 17, the new sci-fi adventure movie from Academy Award-winning writer-director Bong Joon-ho (Parasite), features multiple versions of Robert Pattinson’s character, Mickey Barnes. The actor, best known for his roles in the Twilight franchise and The Batman, confessed to Variety that one of the many accents he does in Mickey 17 may have accidentally been inspired by a Fargo character.
“I actually think I realized today what I was doing,” said Pattinson when asked about the inspiration for his multiple accents in Mickey 17. “We were doing an interview earlier and Bong said one of the thoughts he was having for 18 was Peter Stormare from Fargo. And then I think how that went into my head to do Steve Buscemi as 17 and I kind of did it by accident, but I don’t think I realized that until today. I thought I was doing something else,” Pattinson added.

After a five-year journey from initial announcement to final production, Timothée Chalamet’s portrayal of Bob Dylan in “A Complete Unknown” has secured an Oscar nomination, transforming what once seemed like a troubled project into a critically acclaimed success.
The film, originally titled “Going Electric,” faced significant obstacles when the Covid-19 pandemic halted production in 2020. What initially appeared to be a setback ultimately became an opportunity for Chalamet to deeply immerse himself in the role of the legendary musician.
In a recent interview with W magazine, Chalamet revealed that the extended preparation time was unexpectedly beneficial. “I began to think the film was cursed,” he said, “but the five years it took to get the cast and movie together ended up being a good thing.”

Timothée Chalamet didn’t even know if “A Complete Unknown” would ever get made.
The actor, who is now Oscar-nominated for portraying Bob Dylan in the biopic, told W that he thought the film was “cursed” because of its production delays. Josh Brolin is the Oscar-nominated actor who has jumped back and forth between prestige projects and big studio titles, including his most famous role as the big purple bad guy Thanos in “Avengers: Infinity War” (2018) and “Avengers: End Game” (2019). Let’s take a look back at 16 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
It was over three decades ago that the teenage Brolin made his film debut in “The Goonies” (1985) but it is only in the last 10 years or so that he has risen to the top of the list of respected actors and become a full-out movie star. As Brolin himself joked on an episode of “Inside the Actor’s Studio,” he got everything wrong for the first half of his career and only recently started getting it right. Brolin is perhaps being too hard on himself since he has had a very steady rise in show business...

Mulholland Drive is often cited as the best film the late David Lynch ever made, and while there are several other good choices, it certainly ranks at the top of his canon. In its once-a-decade survey of the greatest movies of all time, Sight & Sound ranked the film at number eight, alongside such cinematic luminaries like Citizen Kane, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and The Godfather. Lynch's passing on Jan. 15, 2025 has sparked a new round of interest in Mulholland Drive, as well as its lingering enigmas which were the calling card of its one-of-a-kind director.
True to its creator's form, Mulholland Drive can be a baffling experience, particularly its third-act shift into what appears to be an entirely different narrative. In truth, the movie follows dream logic to construct a dark and terrifying story about the mirage-like nature of Hollywood. Lynch's work requires...

The Cannes Film Festival has paid tribute to director David Lynch who was a long-time habitué, winning it Palme d’Or prize for Wild at Heart in 1990 and serving as jury president in 2002.
“It is with infinite sadness that we learn of the passing of David Lynch, a unique and visionary artist whose work has influenced cinema like few others,” the festival said in a statement following the announcement of the director’s death on Thursday at the age of 78.
“Winner of the Palme d’Or at the Festival de Cannes in 1990 for Sailor and Lula (Wild At Heart), then the Prix de la mise en scène (Best Director) in 2001 for Mulholland Drive, he elegantly presided over the Jury in 2002,” it continued. “He leaves behind a rare and timeless body of work, whose films will continue to nourish our imagination and inspire all those who see cinema as an art capable of revealing the unspeakable.

“Ohh dear David, All artists and humans who came across you, will mourn your passing on, but I know you are creating movies, writing, painting and meditating from up above,” Harring posted on Instagram. “The Heavens welcome your sweet soul into Eternal Bliss. Goodbye, my friend. May you rest in peace, Buddy Dave.”

Legendary American filmmaker David Lynch has died at the age of 78, it has been confirmed. The beloved director behind some of the most boundary-breaking works of cinema – from Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive to Inland Empire – had previously announced a diagnosis of emphysema that left him unable to leave the house.
The news was confirmed in a Facebook post from Lynch’s family that reads as follows: “It is with deep regret that we, his family, announce the passing of the man and the artist, David Lynch. We would appreciate some privacy at this time. There’s a big hole in the world now that he’s no longer with us. But, as he would say, ‘Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole.’ It’s a beautiful day with golden sunshine and blue skies all the way.”

As Shakespeare wrote, “Life is but a walking shadow,” and Denzel Washington is the poor player who continues to be heard no more, at least in the eyes of BAFTA.
With over 65 film credits, nine Academy Award nominations (including two wins) and more than 270 accolades across a 45-year career, Denzel Washington is widely regarded as one of the greatest actors of his generation. Yet, despite his towering legacy, Washington remains an undeniable blind spot for the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA).
This year is no exception. On Wednesday, the BAFTA nominations were unveiled, and Washington, 70, was conspicuously absent yet again, snubbed for his villainous role in Ridley Scott’s epic “Gladiator II.” Playing Macrinus, a former slave who schemes to control Rome, Washington’s performance has been hailed by critics as a chilling and layered turn worthy of awards recognition.
