Werner Herzog's film "Rescue Dawn" (which hit U.S. theaters in the summer of 2007) was a semi-fictionalized retelling of his own 1997 documentary "Little Dieter Needs to Fly." The documentary followed Dieter Dengler, a German-American pilot whose plane was shot down during the Vietnam War, leading to his imprisonment and torture in a jungle-bound Pow camp. Herzog took Dengler back to Laos and Thailand to relive his experiences there. "Rescue Dawn" extends the re-creation into a full scripted drama. Dengler was played by Christian Bale, giving an intense and marvelous performance. Meanwhile, Steve Zahn and Jeremy Davies co-star as American soldiers who've been captured alongside Dieter.
Herzog, always a stickler for authenticity, went back to Thailand to film in the locations where Dengler was lost and staged his escape. Notably, "Rescue Dawn" marked the first time Herzog ever used CGI in a movie, as he employed it to animate Dengler's initial plane crash.

Redemption Day, the 2021 Moroccan-American action thriller starring Andy García and Gary Dourdan, has unexpectedly surged into the Amazon Prime global Top 10, despite holding a dismal 14% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes and just 4.5/10 on IMDb ratings.
The film, helmed and written by Hicham Hajji, follows a U.S. Marine captain who must rescue his kidnapped wife in Morocco, a plot that’s resonating far more with international audiences than critics probably ever anticipated. This week, it entered the Prime Video Top 10 in 13 countries, including major Latin American markets like Brazil, Argentina, and Peru per FlixPatrol. The strongest traction is coming from Central and South America, where the film has maintained consistent chart positions across the week.
Not just that,Redemption Day has also reached the Top 5 in Bolivia, Ecuador, Honduras, and Nicaragua, with Ecuador and Guatemala charting it for a full seven days. Costa Rica and Brazil also joined the rankings later in the week.

For Supporting Actress in a Drama, Carrie Coon, Parker Posey and Natasha Rothwell were also honored, with the latter seeing a repeat nomination for her role as Belinda, which she originated back in Season 1. Apple TV+’s Foundation series, adapted from Isaac Asimov’s books of the same name, has captivated fans with its dense sci-fi lore, stunning visuals, complex philosophical themes, and galaxy-changing narrative. The show explores the gradual collapse of the Cleonic Dynasty as predicted by mathematician Hari Seldon’s invention—psychohistory.
This fall of the Empire is juxtaposed by the gradual rise of Seldon’s Foundation, which aims to protect a collection of human knowledge called the Encyclopedia Galactica.
With two seasons in the bag and a third currently airing, fans of the Foundation series want more mind-bending, expansive sci-fi tales. Thankfully, there are lore-filled, galaxy-spanning TV shows with the same themes of rebellion, fate, destiny, and more. So, here are seven TV shows that will engross you in their complex worlds, and you will be forced to question the future of humanity.

Disney has released new footage of Glen Powell's upcoming sports comedy series Chad Powers, and it already looks like the streamer's response to Apple TV+'s Ted Lasso. Though Glen Powell is mostly known for his movies, like Anyone But You and Top Gun: Maverick, the rising star also has a promising TV career. Now, we have a new look at his biggest show since 2015's Scream Queens.
Disney's new sizzle reel of upcoming shows includes a short montage of moments from Chad Powers. The road trip film, a staple of American independent cinema, often serves as a vessel for mending fractured relationships. She Dances takes this familiar premise and imbues it with a quiet, resonant sorrow, echoing the emotional journeys seen in films from Hollywood to the parallel cinema of India.
We meet Jason, a father adrift in his own life, and his daughter Claire, a gifted dancer whose precision on the stage masks a deep emotional wound. Jason is tasked with driving Claire to a pivotal dance competition, a trip freighted with years of unspoken feelings. An almost tangible awkwardness hangs between them, born from a family tragedy that has rendered them strangers in the same car.
The film sets a melancholic yet hopeful stage, suggesting that where words have failed, the shared language of art might offer a path back to one another. It posits that dance, much like the expressive traditions in Indian classical arts,...

Denzel Washington is one of those actors who captures an audience as soon as he appears on the screen. His dramatic roles should be studied because the way he brings a character to life is like no other. From Training Day to Malcolm X, The Preacher's Wife with Whitney Houston, and more, the Academy Award winner embodies all the traits of a legendary actor in Hollywood. Many of his films are critically acclaimed, including the 1995 action thriller Crimson Tide, which is getting an unexpected sequel. With its 89% Rotten Tomatoes score, the Academy Award-nominated production's producer, Jerry Bruckheimer, revealed that the sequel is in development, and the studio is hoping to persuade Washington to return.

Get ready to roll tide again. Crimson Tide, the white-knuckle 1995 submarine thriller, has a sequel under construction at the shipyard. Jerry Bruckheimer, who produced the original film, discussed the in-development sequel on The Rich Eisen Show this week while promoting his latest blockbuster, F1: The Movie. And while nobody's turned their key yet, Bruckheimer thinks he can convince the original's star, Denzel Washington, to take the helm once more.
While discussing the high-velocity F1, Bruckheimer and Eisen's conversation turns to Crimson Tide, which starred Washington and the recently departed Gene Hackman. Bruckheimer notes that a sequel to the film is in development, saying that "We have a really good director and writer talking to the Navy right now about what’s going on under the water." And while he doesn't have a commitment from Washington yet, Bruckheimer is confident in his ability to get the Oscar-winner back in the...

Joseph Kosinski's expensive new blockbuster "F1" centers very attentively on Sonny Hayes, a 60-year-old racecar driver played by Brad Pitt. Sonny appears to be down on his luck, as he lives in a van, and only makes ends meet by winning races here and there. Although he doesn't have a very solid career, Sonny seems content. He ostensibly has a gambling problem, but it never presents any serious obstacles for him. At the start of the film, Sonny's old friend Ruben (Javier Bardem) reappears in his life, saying that his skills are needed. Ruben leads a Formula One racing team that has been repeatedly losing, and Sonny's old-man experience -- not to mention his maverick-like, devil-may-care attitudes -- are required to whip the team into shape.
Sonny takes the job and meets the pit crew. Notably, he becomes the coach of Noah (Damson Idris), a skilled driver, but a cocky hotshot.

Glen Powell turns “extremely ugly” for his upcoming comedy series, Chad Powers. The teaser for Powell’s forthcoming project is out, and it shows the American actor, otherwise known for his good looks and charming personality, donning a fake moustache, curly wigs, and bulky prosthetics to go undercover and join a new football team.
Inspired by Eli Manning’s viral alter ego, the series revolves around Russ Holliday (Glen Powell), a failed college football quarterback who goes ‘disguise mode’ to restart his football career. Going incognito for career, comedy, and witty…very Hannah Montana-ish. Looks like Powell’s coming series is that kind of comedy, Miley Cyrus might want to distance herself from.

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: a father and his young adult daughter embark on a road trip that takes some comically uncomfortable twists and turns before they’re finally forced to say the unsaid things that created so much distance between them.
Rick Gomez’s directorial debut “She Dances” doesn’t win any points for originality, with a premise that could be found in one form or another on the festival circuit in pretty much every year since the dawn of independent film. And it’s a little too willing to indulge in cliches, particularly in a first act that’s dominated by tired plot points like “the teenage daughter doesn’t know how to change a flat tire and Dad insists on teaching her” and “the hotel mixed up our reservation, so we’re stuck at the worst motel in town.” But even if it...

There’s a famous story about director Martin Scorsese wanting to cast a “Cybill Shepherd type” for the role of Betsy the volunteer worker for his landmark 1976 film “Taxi Driver.” Shepherd’s agent, Sue Mengers, heard about the casting call and put forth none other than Shepherd herself.
“The Righteous Gemstones” casting department similarly went right to the top when looking for an actor to kick off the final season’s first episode. “Prelude” is a flashback-driven origin story of one Elijah Gemstone, a violent charlatan and drifter in the Civil War who possesses a gift for the grift, and the role is played by none other than Hollywood superstar Bradley Cooper.
“We needed somebody who the audience would immediately connect to, and that they would want to watch while not missing and hoping and wondering, ‘What’s going on here and where’s [Danny McBride’s] Jesse?’” casting director Sherry Thomas said.

‘She Dances’ Review: Steve Zahn’s Daughter Audrey Is a Standout in an Uneven Film on Familial Trauma
Directed by actor Rick Gomez in his feature filmmaking debut and co-written with actor Steve Zahn, the sweet yet uneven dramedy “She Dances” is a proud family affair both on screen and off. When the title credits read “Introducing Audrey Zahn” at the start, the effect is undeniably disarming — this is papa Zahn, among the friendliest faces of many an ensemble piece, swiftly nipping any “nepo baby” talk in the bud by enthusiastically supporting his talented daughter, and starring alongside her too.
Young Zahn justifies that pride throughout “She Dances,” which traces the story of a father and daughter as they navigate domestic trauma during a road trip, and mend their broken bond in the process. The stilted writing and direction, sadly, leave a lot to be desired: Emotions are under-explored and the humor misfires, with a perfectly capable cast asked to deliver some truly clunky lines. But the two...

There are probably quite a few proud fathers who would love to make a mainstream tribute to their own offspring. Few of them, however, have the resources — or talents — to handle it as well as Steve Zahn does with “She Dances.”

“We’re all about showcasing new ways for people to express themselves and differentiate themselves and explore whatever new forms of storytelling are speaking to them,” says Jane Rosenthal, co-founder of Tribeca.
This year’s festival isn’t just about the pop culture icons — though it will premiere new documentaries on Metallica, De La Soul and Billy Joel. Tribeca’s nonfiction lineup also includes intimate looks at news legends, sushi masters and even a giant manta ray named “Willy Wow.”
Then there are films that put a meta-twist on things by having real-life fathers and daughters...

Matthew McConaughey’s first movie in over five years recently debuted at SXSW to a stunning score of 97% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, but one of his older films has been stealing the spotlight lately. McConaughey stars alongside Silo Season 2 veteran Steve Zahn in Sahara, the 2005 desert adventure following a master explorer who hunts for a lost Civil War battleship in the deserts of West Africa. Sahara has been streaming on Paramount+ for a while now, but the film recently surged into the streamer’s top 10, sitting at #9 at the time of writing. In addition to McConaughey and Zahn, Sahara also stars Penélope Cruz, and it earned a low score of 37% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, as well as a 53% rating from audiences on the Popcornmeter.
