The Austin Film Festival (Aff) announced on Tuesday the first wave of film premieres for its 32nd annual festival, taking place Oct. 23-30 alongside its renowned Writers Conference (Oct. 23-26), which together celebrate the art of storytelling on screen and on the page.

This year’s slate features high-profile world premieres, A-list ensembles and highly anticipated Texas premieres from award-winning filmmakers. Additionally, writing and filmmaking partners Clint Bentley and Greg Kwedar will receive the 2025 Writer’s Writer Award, presented as part of the screening of their latest film, “Train Dreams.”

The Highlander reboot has cast another major character. The upcoming movie, which is set to be directed by the John Wick franchise's Chad Stahelski, is a reboot of the 1986 fantasy movie of the same name, which followed the Scottish immortal Connor MacLeod (Christopher Lambert) being mentored by Egyptian immortal Juan Sánchez-Villalobos Ramírez (Sean Connery) amid an ancient, violent feud.

In the Highlander reboot, which is scheduled to kick off production in September, Henry Cavill stars as MacLeod opposite Russell Crowe as Ramírez and Marisa Abela in an unknown lead role.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Scottish actor Karen Gillan has now joined the cast of the Highlander reboot as Heather, the mortal wife of MacLeod.

Ken Jeong is about to add another title to his already impressive résumé.

The veteran actor, comedian, writer and producer, who got his start as a licensed physician, has been selected to receive a King of Comedy award from the 15th annual Catalina Film Festival. The prize will be doled out during the fest’s milestone anniversary and awards ceremony at the Avalon Theatre inside Catalino Casino on Catalina Island off the coast of Southern California on Sept. 27.

Mira Sorvino will be making her Broadway debut next month!

The Oscar-winning actress will be playing the role of Roxie Hart in the musical Chicago beginning on Monday, September 15 through Sunday, November 2.

“I have wished to dance and sing in a Broadway musical since I was a small child. To join Chicago, such a legendary show, and such an incredible cast past and present, is literally a dream come true!!” Mira said in a statement.

Mira is best known for her Oscar, Golden Globe, and Critics Choice Award-winning performance in the movie Mighty Aphrodite. She most recently was seen in the Starz series Shining Vale and the Ryan Murphy shows American Crime Story: Impeachment and Hollywood.

Chicago is one of the longest-running shows in Broadway history, behind only The Phantom of the Opera.

Exploring themes from the ’60s such as women’s liberation and the Black Power movement, the film takes place in the summer of 1969, as the infamous Hurricane Camille marks its tragic landfall. Romy & Michele: The Musical will debut Off Broadway this fall, producers announced today.

Based on the 1997 cult film classic Romy & Michele’s High School Reunion that starred Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow, the musical features a book by the film’s screenwriter Robin Schiff, music and lyrics by Gwendolyn Sanford and Brandon Jay (Orange is the New Black) and direction by Kristin Hanggi (Rock of Ages).

The production will begin previews at Stage 42 on Tuesday, October 14, with an opening night set for Tuesday, October 28.

Victoria Franco’s debut feature “Twelve Moons” bowed Saturday in Tribeca’s International Narrative Competition, drawing a full house to Village East after its world-premiere screening on 7 June. The 97-minute Mexican drama follows Sofía, a 40-year-old architect whose infertility struggle and mounting addictions send her spiralling through Mexico City’s night streets. Festival programmer Frédéric Boyer hails the film as “a haunting portrait of struggle, grief, longing and self-destruction,” praising Ana de la Reguera’s lead performance for its “raw physicality and emotional depth.”

Founded by Tribeca and Chanel in 2015, the mentorship program provides industry support, artistic development, and funding to emerging U.S.-based self-identifying women and non-binary filmmakers.

“Storytelling is a profound responsibility … and I’ve realized, actually, the most powerful thing that I can do is what I’ve been trained to do my life, which is to tell a story,” Through Her Lens Advisory Committee member Patty Jenkins said during the luncheon.

When actress Mira Sorvino thinks about what and who helped her launch her career, she credits Tribeca Festival co-founder Jane Rosenthal for giving her that break.

“Jane Rosenthal actually gave me my first job in the industry. It started off being a volunteer position — I was an intern at Tribeca Productions, reading scripts. Then it turned into a paid position as a reader after they ended up liking my coverage. I did that for two years, and during that time I actually read the script Amongst Friends that ended up being the first feature that I ever starred in. “Throughout my career, my story has been told from so many lenses outside of myself and from so many perspectives outside of myself. I’ve been shot by so many photographers and directors and never been able to actually get behind the lens and see myself in the way that I do,” Cyrus told Variety on the carpet. “That’s something that makes it feel like really special and really intimate because I’ve never really gotten to actually tell my story in a way that really is this first person.

The 2025 Tribeca Festival kicked off with the world premiere of the HBO documentary Billy Joel: And So it Goes, but its subject was unable to attend the celebration.

Joel announced last week that he had been diagnosed with brain disorder normal pressure hydrocephalus (Nph), leading him to cancel his upcoming concerts and prompting concern from fans.

In keeping with that focus on recovery, Joel wasn’t on hand for the Tribeca Festival opening night celebration, but the directors and producers of the two-part film, echoing comments made yesterday from Joel friend Howard Stern, indicated there’s no reason to be too concerned about the “Piano Man” performer.

“He’s going to be fine,” co-director Susan Lacy told The Hollywood Reporter before Wednesday night’s screening. “He just needs to recover. He needs to do the physical therapy, which he’s doing — the doctors were telling him yesterday he’ll be fine.

The 24th annual Tribeca Film Festival 2025 kicked off Wednesday, June 4, with the world premiere of Billy Joel: And So It Goes. More notable names among this year’s jury include Jennifer Beals, Ilana Glazer, Sheila Nevins, Eliza Hittman, Annie Murphy, Kyle MacLachlan, Alex Karpovsky and Mickey Sumner.

“We’re proud to welcome an eclectic group of jurors to this year’s Tribeca Festival,” Tribeca Enterprises executive vp Nancy Lefkowitz said in a statement. “Their breadth of expertise across genres will be instrumental in recognizing standout storytellers and honoring bold new voices from around the world.”

The juries for Tribeca’s 15 competition categories are as follows.

The 2025 Tribeca Festival is bringing the best of the best together to select this year’s festival awards. IndieWire can announce that Nia DaCosta, Andrew Ahn, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Kyle MacLachlan, Eliza Hittman, and more acclaimed filmmakers will be among the jury members for festival, which will take place June 4 through 15.

The Tribeca Festival, presented by Okx, will honor works across 15 competition categories. In addition, the Nora Ephron Award will honor an exceptional female filmmaker who represents the spirit and vision of the legendary filmmaker and writer. The winners in each category will be announced at the Tribeca Festival ceremony on June 12.

Actor Val Kilmer, best known for his roles in Top Gun, Batman Forever, Willow, Tombstone, and more, died Tuesday April 1 in Los Angeles. That's according to The New York Times. The Nyt reports that his daughter, Mercedes Kilmer, says the cause was pneumonia. Kilmer had previously been diagnosed with throat cancer, but recovered in 2014. Kilmer's last appearance on-screen was reprising his role as Admiral Tom 'Iceman' Kazansky in Top Gun: Maverick for a bittersweet scene opposite his character's formal rival, Tom Cruise' Captain Pete "Maverick" Mitchell. Kilmer's death marks a career that has spanned decades.

Kilmer was born Val Edward Kilmer on New Year's Eve (December 31) 1959 in Los Angeles. His acting career began in the early 1980s. He would star in one of the 80s biggest blockbusters that didn't have the word Star or Wars in it, Top Gun in 1986. The film would gross $357 million when it only took a reported $15 million to make.
