'Sacreligious': Austin Butler rules himself out of playing James Bond
Austin Butler has ruled himself out of playing James Bond. The Caught Stealing actor has previously worked with Denis Villeneuve - who will direct the next installment of the spy franchise - on the Dune movies and though he "loves" the idea of reuniting with the filmmaker to take on the lead role, he doesn't think it would be a "good idea" as the part should go to a Brit.Speaking to Sam Thompson on the Hits Radio Breakfast Show, he said: "I love that man but no calls as far as James Bond goes but I don't think that would be a good idea [for me to play Bond], I'm an American, I can...

Karen Gillan Joins Henry Cavill in ‘Highlander’ Remake (Exclusive)
Karen Gillan
Karen Gillan has joined the sword-swinging cast of Highlander, Amazon MGM’s remake of the 1980s cult classic.

Henry Cavill is leading the cast that includes Russell Crowe, Dave Bautista, and Marisa Abela.

The action fantasy is being directed by Chad Stahelski and is slated for a theatrical release. Principal photography is due to begin at the end of September.

The original Highlander, released in 1986, starred Christopher Lambert as Connor MacLeod, a Medieval Scottish Highlander who discovers he is an immortal warrior. With the help of a swordsman named Ramirez, played by Sean Connery, the titular Highlander battles other immortals across the centuries, culminating in a modern battle in which, like the classic line of dialogue goes, “there can be only one.”

In the remake, Cavill is playing MacLeod while Crowe is Ramirez. Bautista is the savage warrior named The Kurgen while Industry actress Marisa Abela also has a leading role.

Glen Powell has insisted he "should not" be in the running to play James Bond. The Top Gun: Maverick actor has been among those tipped to take over from Daniel Craig as the suave spy, but he feels that the role should go to an "authentic Brit" rather than an American star.He told The Hollywood Reporter: “I’m Texan. Henry Cavill in Highlander
‘I luxuriate in the weird details’: why Highlander is my feelgood movie
Henry Cavill in Highlander
The latest in our series of writers paying tribute to their favourite comfort watches is a journey back to the unusual sci-fi antics of 1986

With all due respect to Flash Gordon, there is only room in my heart for one maximalist 1980s movie blending science fiction, fantasy and romance with a banging Queen soundtrack. That film is Highlander, the stylised but strangely lofty 1986 wannabe blockbuster with a premise so ridiculous – immortals tussle throughout human history in a beheading battle royale – it is often deployed as a pop culture punchline.

Even Highlander’s production history sounds like a mistranslated joke about national stereotypes walking into a bar. Australian director Russell Mulcahy chose French-American actor Christopher Lambert to embody the titular mythic Scottish hero, then cast actual mythic Scottish hero Sean Connery as his preening Egyptian turned Spaniard mentor. But the key to unlocking the mood-improving pleasures of Mulcahy’s offbeat epic...

63 Years Later, John Wayne’s WWII Masterpiece Is Free to Watch
Image
Sixty-three years after it first hit theaters, The Longest Day is still one of the most impressive war movies ever made — and now it’s free to watch on YouTube (with ads). The 1962 black-and-white epic set out to capture the story of D-Day in a way no one had tried before, showing the invasion not just from the American side, but through the eyes of British, French, and German soldiers as well.

Producer Darryl F. Zanuck, who was already known for putting together huge productions like Tora! Tora! Tora!, was boldly attempting to capture the invasion of Normandy through multiple perspectives: American, British, French, and German. To achieve this, he enlisted three directors — Ken Annakin,...

Terence Stamp, Star Of Superman And Far From The Madding Crowd, Dies Aged 87
Image
Legendary British actor Terence Stamp, Oscar nominated star of Billy Budd and beloved by legions for his role as General Zod in Richard Donner's Superman, has died at the age of 87. In a statement shared with Reuters, Stamp's family confirmed that he passed away on Sunday morning, and said the following: "He leaves behind an extraordinary body of work, both as an actor and as a writer that will continue to touch and inspire people for years to come. We ask for privacy at this sad time."

Born in Stepney, London on 22 July 1938 to Ethel Esther and Thomas Stamp, Terence Henry Stamp's love affair with the big screen began at the tender age of just three, when his mother took him to see Gary Cooper starrer Beau Geste. It was an experience that clearly left a mark on a young Stamp as, after completing his childhood education...

Terence Stamp remembered: The actor’s most memorable and most-awarded roles from ‘Billy Budd’ to ‘Superman II’
Image
Celebrated British actor and comic book cinema's first supervillain Terence Stamp died Aug. 17 at age 87. Stamp's family has confirmed his passing, but has not shared additional details at press time.

Born in 1938 in the Stepney district of London's East End, Stamp rose to prominence alongside a new generation of U.K. actors who became international movie stars in the 1960s — names that included Michael Caine, Sean Connery, Oliver Reed, and Peter O'Toole. That group directly preceded Hollywood's own vanguard of rising stars like Dustin Hoffman, Al Pacino, and Robert De Niro who dominated U.S. movie screens in the 1970s.

Even amid a crowded field of talent on both sides of the pond, Stamp routinely stood out from the competition courtesy of his piercing gaze and adeptness at portraying fierce iconoclasts and outsiders dedicated to advancing their own causes — even if those causes were more villainous than virtuous.

Brothers Kevin and Andrew Macdonald discussed their respective careers in an ever-shifting film industry Sunday at the Edinburgh International Film Festival‘s keynote session.

Kevin Macdonald, an Oscar winner for his feature-length documentary One Day in September (1999), is also known for his fiction work, including The Last King of Scotland (2006) and State of Play (2009), as well as Touching the Void (2003) and How I Live Now (2013). Andrew Macdonald, meanwhile, is a producer best known for his collaborations with Danny Boyle and Alex Garland on the likes of Trainspotting (1996), The Beach (2000), Ex Machina (2014) and the 28 Days Later franchise.

The session, hosted by Edinburgh TV Festival boss Rowan Woods, began with a blast from the past: the brothers’ short film that saw them as 20-something-year-olds interview the creatives — including Robbie Coltrane, Sam Fuller and Michael Winner — at the 1992 Edinburgh Film Festival. The pair were pressing industry names on how to get Shallow Grave made.

Terence Stamp at an event for Valkiria (2008)
Terence Stamp, British actor in Superman, The Limey and more, dies at 87
Terence Stamp at an event for Valkiria (2008)
Terence Stamp, the British actor who made a name for himself by delivering range through a distinct voice and chiseled face, has passed away. He was 87.

Despite an admirable and budding career in his native England, it would be his work in Hollywood fare like Superman and its first sequel that gave Terence Stamp international recognition, playing General Zod in both films in a way that shaped so much about what we love about the first two movies. But he was actually nearly on his way in that scope well before that, as he was considered to take over the part of James Bond after Sean Connery temporarily stepped down. Instead, George Lazenby would lead On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, although we do have to wonder what sort of trajectory the franchise would have taken with Stamp as 007.

Terence Stamp made his debut in 1962’s Billy Budd, earning what would...

Sean Connery in Brumas de inquietud (1958)
Poll: Who is the Best 80s Action Hero?
Sean Connery in Brumas de inquietud (1958)
I don’t think anyone would argue that the 1980s were the heyday of action movies. Sure, there were action heroes in the sixties and seventies—great ones like Sean Connery, Steve McQueen, and Clint Eastwood—but in the eighties they were larger than life. This was the era of Schwarzenegger, Stallone, and so many more.

Yet, the action genre seems to be dying out. Sure, there are still good action movies being made, with amazing folks like Bob Odenkirk, Jason Statham, Keanu Reeves, Liam Neeson, and Charlize Theron carrying the torch. But the movies are on a smaller canvas in a lot of ways than they used to be—not for lack of trying.

This week, Noah Centineo was announced as playing a Vietnam-era John Rambo in an upcoming prequel, while the man himself, Stallone, is currently playing yet another defining character on his show Tulsa King. Meanwhile, Schwarzenegger is still beloved,...

10 Blockbuster Movies That Didn't Live Up To The Hype
Image
Anyone who loves movies has suffered the agony that hits when an anticipated blockbuster fails to meet expectations. Believe us when we say, we feel your pain. While it's fair to admit that, at times, disappointment stems from our own unrealistic hype -- sky-high anticipation no film could possibly satisfy -- more often than not, the fault falls on a poorly or lazily produced product.

Blame the blockbuster formula, which often forces directors to begin filming without a finished script and hands creative control to the marketing department once the budget balloons past the danger zone. By default, any picture that costs north of $200 million has to appeal to the widest audience imaginable to recoup its cost, meaning bean counting takes precedence over creativity. A picture like "Hancock," starring Will Smith, for example, might have played well to a niche audience, but since it cost over $150 million to make, its...

When Dune Director Denis Villeneuve Opened Up About His Lifelong Wish Of Making A James Bond Movie: “It Would Be A Massive…”
Image
Denis Villeneuve Wants To Direct A James Bond Film? (Photo Credit – Prime Video)

Denis Villeneuve has a deep-rooted obsession with James Bond, and it turns out he was desperate for his shot at the 007 franchise long before he actually took up the reigns to helm a movie. The Dune director, fresh off the release of his epic sci-fi adaptation, revealed his fascination with the iconic spy back to his childhood.

But don’t get it twisted: he wasn’t just talking about any Bond movie. He was talking about stepping into the director’s chair for the series that had shaped his love for cinema. When asked about the possibility of taking the reins of a future Bond film, Villeneuve wasted no time jumping at the chance.

“Frankly—and I can’t believe I would say that—but the answer would be a massive yes,” he said on MTV’s Happy Sad Confused podcast,...

Demolition Man (1993) – What Happened to This Sci-Fi Action Movie?
Image
What if I told you a future existed with no crime and plenty of Taco Bell? But also no sex, red meat, alcohol, cursing, nicotine, or… toilet paper? Today’s video is about the outlandish story of Demolition Man: a movie that almost featured a Jean-Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagal throwdown that would have broken the fabric of space and time. That almost never existed entirely when an over-bloated budget and schedule brought a first time director and production to the brink. Finally, a movie that survived all that and managed to 30 years later become an often quoted tale of Utopian caution that draws frightening and hilarious parallels to the events of the world we live in today. But still features a lot of ass kicking and future-guns. Of course. Sometimes you have to send a maniac to catch one! This is the story of what happened to Demolition Man.

Scott Rose-Marsh Screen-Tests For James Bond 26: A Potential First For The Franchise
Image
New rumors have surfaced about who will next play 007 in James Bond 26, and if this casting pans out, it would mean a unique first for the franchise. Bond 26 is being directed by Denis Villeneuve and written by Steven Knight, but, of course, the industry is obsessed with the undecided lead star.

The original Bond in the Eon film franchise was Sean Connery. However, Sean Connery's seven James Bond movies make up just a small portion of the 25-film franchise. Others who have stepped into the role include George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan, and - most recently - Daniel Craig.

Craig's debut in the franchise was in 2006's Casino Royale, and his tenure in the role continued until the death of his version of the character in 2021's No Time to Die. No further installment has been mounted since then. In the intervening years, longtime producers Barbara Broccoli...

Gotg Star Dave Bautista Joins Henry Cavill In Highlander Reboot As The Villainous Kurgan
Image
"I have something to say... It's better to burn out than to fade away!"

Chad Stahelski's Highlander reboot has found its villain, with Dave Bautista in final talks to play the immortal barbarian known as The Kurgan, who was memorably brought to life by Clancy Brown in the '80s movie.

The Kurgan, or Victor Kruger as he goes by in modern times, is one of the world's oldest immortals, emerging as the nemesis of Connor MacLeod (Henry Cavill) after "killing" him on the battlefield in 1536. Bautista was actually circling this role back in 2015, for an earlier take on the property that was set to be helmed by Cedric Nicolas-Troyan.

Russell Crowe is also on board as MacLeod's mentor and fellow immortal warrior, Ramirez, who was played by Sean Connery in the 1986 original. Industry actress Marisa Abela will play the female lead.

Edinburgh Film Festival’s Paul Ridd on Rebuilding a Legacy, Elevating New Voices and Turning the Fringe Into an Asset
Image
Two weeks before the Edinburgh International Film Festival kicks off its 78th edition, Festival Director and CEO Paul Ridd seemed almost at ease.

“We’re not in the eye of the storm,” he said, “but we’re sort of circling it.”

Since taking the helm in late 2023, alongside festival producer Emma Boa, Ridd has overseen a strategic reinvention of one of the world’s oldest film festivals from building a new board and footprint to rethinking its mission within Scotland’s festival-heavy cultural calendar.

“This year is really year one,” he told Variety. “Last year we laid the groundwork, we showed that the new structure could work. Now, it’s about growing on that ballast.”

That growth is visible across the board. EIFF25 presents 43 new feature films, 18 of them world premieres, including the 10-title Sean Connery Competition for Feature Filmmaking Excellence — carrying substantial £50,000 prize awarded by audience vote. Alongside that are six retrospective screenings,...

Highlander | Dave Bautista to play villain in the reboot
Image
The Highlander reboot appears to have its villain, as word gets out that Dave Bautista could play Kurgan in Chad Stahelski’s new film.

Almost 30 years on from the 1986 original, Highlander is getting a remake courtesy of John Wick director Chad Stahelski. Filming is said to be getting underway this autumn, and it sounds as though the production has slotted in a major piece in its casting puzzle: Dave Bautista is said to be in talks to star as the villain according to Deadline.

Assuming the meetings and form signing all go off without a hitch, this means Bautista will play The Kurgan – the towering, bloodthirsty villain played with wild-eyed relish by Clancy Brown in the first film. He’ll do battle over the centuries with Henry Cavill’s fellow immortal, Connor MacCleod (previously played by Christopher Lambert), while Russell Crowe will replace Sean Connery as the flamboyant mentor, Ramirez.

Dave Bautista is reportedly nearing two deals to star in Road House 2 and Henry Cavill’s Highlander reboot
Jake Gyllenhaal
Jake Gyllenhaal could have someone new to punch in the face for Road House 2 if Dave Bautista signs on the dotted line! According to sources close to Deadline, the Dune and Glass Onion star is closing in on deals for two anticipated action films: Road House 2 and Highlander, starring Henry Cavill as the immortal warrior.

Deadline says Dave Bautista will star opposite Henry Cavill in the Chad Stahelski-directed Highlander reboot as the Kurgan, the character made famous by Clancy Brown in the original sci-fi classic starring Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery. Rumors about who would play Kurgan have circulated since the project’s announcement, and casting Bautista as the immortal powerhouse makes perfect sense.

Highlander reboot lands MCU star for the villainous lead
Image
According to a new report from The Hollywood Reporter, the upcoming Highlander reboot has found its villain in the hulking form of Dave Bautista!

40 years after its release, Highlander remains a wonderful cult favorite movie. It starred Christopher Lambert as Connor MacLeod, a 15th-century Scotsman who’s killed in battle only to become part of a race of Immortals among humanity. They can recover from almost any wound with the ability to die only to return to life with their wounds healed. The one death they can’t return from is decapitation.

These Immortals play “the Game,” a duel where the winner beheads his enemy. That unleashes the "Quickening," a massive energy surge that transfers the loser’s power to the winner. The ultimate goal is the “Prize,” supposedly the power of every Immortal who ever lived. That leads to the franchise’s tag line, “There can be only one.

Bautista will take on the role of the Kurgan, another immortal who has been hunting down Highlanders for centuries. This new cast is shaping up to be just as exciting as the original 1986 film, which starred Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery, and Clancy Brown.

The casting news was first reported by The Hollywood Reporter, and it’s just one part of a reboot that’s been in the works for years. Back in 2008, Summit Entertainment bought the rights to remake the original movie, with plans for a film titled Highlander: The Reckoning. Over the years, several directors and writers have been attached, including Justin Lin, Melissa Rosenberg, and Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, but the project faced many changes and delays.

Henry Cavill's 'Highlander' Reboot Casts Dave Bautista as Its Villain
Image
Dave Bautista is bringing the 1980s back, one action franchise at a time. He's now set to star in two major revivals of '80s VHS action classics from Amazon MGM Studios. He's said to be close to signing on for Road House 2, the sequel to the Jake Gyllenhaal-led remake of the Patrick Swayze brawler, and will also star in Chad Stahelski's revival of the immortal Highlanderfranchise. Bautista is said to be playing the role of the villainous Kurgan in the latter.

According to reports, Bautista is circling both roles, and is expected to sign both, but has not yet officially put pen to paper. In Road House 2, he'll be joining Gyllenhaal, who starred as UFC fighter turned bouncer Dalton in the Doug Liman-directed remake in 2024. Guy Ritchie was originally set to helm the sequel, but dropped out last month; Ilya Naishuller has stepped in to steer the film.

Image
Dave Bautista is in final negotiations to play the villain in Amazon MGM’s remake of the 1980s cult classic Highlander.

The actor will join Henry Cavill and Russell Crowe in the action fantasy, which hails from Amazon MGM’s United Artists banner and is slated to get a theatrical release.

Chad Stahelski is directing the feature that is due to begin principal photography at the end of the September and shoot in locales in the UK as well as Hong Kong.

The original Highlander, released in 1986, starred Christopher Lambert as Connor MacLeod, a Medieval Scottish Highlander who discovers he is an immortal warrior. Why Taron Egerton Could Still Be the Perfect James Bond Even if He Doesn’t Think So
Image
The idea that Taron Egerton doesn’t see himself as James Bond is, frankly, baffling. The actor has every tool in the shed: charm, grit, screen presence, dramatic range, and yet he insists he wouldn’t be a “good choice for it”. That’s not humility; it’s probably hesitation dressed in modesty. With Denis Villeneuve officially announced to direct the next installment of the franchise and Amazon eager to revamp 007 for a new era, casting someone like Egerton isn’t just a safe bet; it’s the smart one.

Yes, Egerton has shrugged off the rumors, saying (via Collider):

I really love James Bond and particularly Daniel Craig’s tenure. But I think I wouldn’t be good at it, and I think there’s so many cool, younger actors who would be great for it. I think it would be wasted on me, probably.

But wait,...

Michael Douglas’ Retirement From Hollywood Backfires, Affects His Relationship With Catherine Zeta-Jones
Image
Michael Douglas’ retirement from Hollywood was meant to be a peaceful new chapter, but instead, it’s reportedly creating unexpected tension at home. Insiders close to the actor told RadarOnline that while Douglas hoped to enjoy more quality time with his wife, Catherine Zeta-Jones is finding it hard to adjust. Their relationship reportedly worked best when both had busy careers and time apart.

The marriage has worked best when they had space from each other. She’s not begrudging him the right to give up his career, but knows it means they’ll spend more time together and she’s not going to get the quiet and peace of mind she likes. Catherine encourages him to attend events on his own and travel, but he’s not doing much of that anymore. She’d like more space, but she’s not going to get it, and he’ll be around...

Amazon CEO ‘Cannot Wait’ to Start Denis Villeneuve’s James Bond Movie
Image
Amazon can already hear the strains of John Barry’s iconic theme paired with that gun barrel shot — the one to which Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan, and Daniel Craig have all leant their figures. CEO Andy Jassey said on a July 31 call (which highlighted his company’s better-than-expected Q3 earning) that “James Bond is in the hands of one of today’s greatest filmmakers,” and adding, “We cannot wait to get started on 007’s next adventure.”

Jassey is referring to none other than Denis Villeneuve, who was announced in June as the next director to take on the franchise — which already has 25 official releases in its canon. Villeneuve will have the unique position of being the first steward to not be collaborating with the Broccoli family, which has overseen every Bond movie since “Dr. No” in 1962.

How exactly Amazon MGM Studios will handle Bond...

The Naked Gun Review: Akiva Schaffer’s Reboot Spoofs a New Era of Cinematic Crime Pulp
Image
In its original iteration, the Zucker brothers’ Naked Gun wasn’t just carried by Leslie Nielsen’s performance––nearly every aspect of the first two David Zucker-directed films was a reflection of it. As buffoonish detective lieutenant Frank Drebin, Nielsen’s scenery-chewing baritone encapsulated the square-jawed, hypermasculine self-seriousness of a generation of patriotic popular entertainment unleashed on America during the Reagan years, themselves often self-conscious mimics of the leading men and man-of-action morality plays of the midcentury Hollywood pulp on which Nielsen cut his teeth. Drebin’s guileless stupidity as he bumbles through formula-perfect cop thriller plots playing the maverick hero, and Nielsen’s readiness to bug his eyes out or call a man “Mr. Poopy Pants” in the middle of an otherwise dead-serious delivery, gleefully deflated the macho put-on, luxuriating in pushing the already juvenile nature of the popular fantasies just a few key steps over the edge from self-parody to parody.
