As Alfred Matthew Yankovic can attest, it very much pays to be weird.
According to Billboard’s Boxscore report, the “Eat It” artist grossed roughly $8.4 million from his Bigger & Weirder Tour in July alone — and he still has 15 stops left.
Weird Al’s dates in places like Toronto, Philadelphia, and most notably, New York City, where he sold out Madison Square Garden, helped him move a total of 140,000 tickets. His Msg show managed to bring in $1 million alone, cementing Weird Al not only among the top 100 highest-earning artists of the month, but as July’s top-earning comedy performer.
The “White & Nerdy” singer beat out Dude Perfect and Matt Rife by margins of millions.

President Donald Trump plans to perform a “comprehensive review” of the materials and exhibits in the eight museums of the Smithsonian Institution in order to ensure that the national educational organization is in line with his values and his interpretation of our national history. Hopefully, Trump isn’t a huge Coolio fan.
Founded in 1846, the Smithsonian Institution has long served as a nonpartisan national museum group that doesn’t belong to any three branches of the federal government, but instead serves the entire American population through the preservation of and research into our shared history and culture. If Trump manages to overhaul one of America’s most important cultural achievements to fit his narrow, uneducated and prejudiced worldview, what was once a source of national pride will become a parody of an educational institution — and we’ll even lose our best parodies, too.

For seven years, Jon Batiste watched Stephen Colbert lead The Late Show night after night. The musician began serving as bandleader on the series with his house band Stay Human in 2015 and held the position through 2022. Now, Colbert is on his way out, too, following the cancellation of The Late Show. The musician is confident that his former colleague and collaborator will land on his feet
“I’m very grateful to him and I think where he goes next, his voice won’t be silenced,” Batiste told Rolling Stone Au/Nz in a recent interview.

One of the biggest shadows cast over the original trilogy of Naked Gun movies is the Zucker brothers casting of O.J. Simpson in the role of Nordberg. It wasn’t out of the ordinary for the Zuckers to put sports figures in some supporting roles, as they also used athletes like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in a classic role in Airplane. However, Simpson played somewhat of a prominent character, and with the new incarnation of the spoof film addressing how the characters are the offspring of the originals, this left the writers with something hanging.

It’s been over 35 years since The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! crash-landed into pop culture with all the subtlety of a banana peel on a courtroom floor. Directed by David Zucker, the movie is a chaotic mix of slapstick, puns, deadpan delivery, and pure nonsense. This 1988 comedy classic didn’t just make us laugh, it rewired our brains to never look at police procedurals the same way again.
But the movie wouldn’t have hit nearly as hard without its totally off-the-wall cast. You had Leslie Nielsen delivering punchlines with the seriousness of a Shakespearean actor, Priscilla Presley proving she could do comedy like a pro, and Weird Al popping up just to make things even weirder (in the best way). It was the kind of casting that shouldn’t have worked, but somehow nailed it.
Some were comedy legends. Some were wild choices that totally caught us off guard.

The Naked Gun writers are proud to have stuffed their reboot with references to the classic movies.
Dan Gregor and Doug Mand, who co-wrote Paramount’s comedy reboot with director Akiva Schaffer, sat down with The Hollywood Reporter after the film’s solid opening weekend at the box office. Liam Neeson and Pamela Anderson star in the franchise’s fourth movie that revives the spoof series that featured Leslie Nielsen playing detective Frank Drebin and kicked off with director David Zucker’s original 1988 film.
During the interview, Gregor and Mand discuss acknowledging O.J. Simpson previously starring in the franchise as Officer Nordberg; potential ideas for another sequel; and how they landed on the movie’s memorable cameos.
The film’s villain definitely feels Elon Musk-coded.
Dan Gregor Musk-y?
Were there concerns about igniting the wrath of someone like Musk?

Back in early June, a couple of days before Emmy nomination voting began, I wrote a column that included a wish list of what I’d like to see in the nominations. It was a modest list, only four items, built around the idea that what I really wanted was a slate that was a little less predictable than most recent years.
So now that we’re halfway between the announcement of the nominations and the beginning of final voting, it’s time to look back at that list and see how many of my wishes came true.
Spoiler alert: not many.

This post contains spoilers for "The Naked Gun" (2025).
Other than starring in the beloved sitcom "Cheers" as fact-spouting mailman Cliff Clavin, actor John Ratzenberger is probably best known for making repeated voice cameos in the many films of Pixar Animation. Ratzenberger has appeared in almost all of Pixar's movies in some kind of minor voice role, though his presence in them has waned recently, with "Luca," "Turning Red," "Lightyear," "Elemental," and "Elio" missing his presence as a sort of good luck charm. Thankfully, we have another cameo tradition that has just picked up steam again, thanks to the release of the "Naked Gun" reboot.
For those who may not recall, in addition to delivering endless slapstick bits, meta laughs, and silly puns, there's one prominent constant that has popped up in every previous installment of the "Naked Gun" film franchise, and he goes by the name "Weird Al" Yankovic.

While the new Naked Gun movie isn’t perfect, it’s still a very funny spoof that even manages to utilize one franchise regular in a uniquely hilarious way. Two if you count that photo of O.J. Simpson.
As we’ve mentioned before, it was widely expected that “Weird Al” Yankovic would make an appearance in 2025’s The Naked Gun, seeing as how he’s friends with director Akiva Schaffer, and has cameoed in every previous installment of the franchise.
Al’s role in the movie was confirmed when the “Eat It” singer showed up at the movie’s premiere and walked the red carpet in a manner that justified his nickname.
Fans seemed thrilled to learn that The Naked Gun is continuing Al’s streak, but the question remained: Would it live up to the previous cameos?

The Naked Gun, a legacy sequel and the fourth installment in the comedy franchise, almost took a very different turn. A decade ago, the plan was to reboot it with Ed Helms in the lead. But now? South Park’s streaming numbers are up 258 percent following last week’s Season 27 premiere, “Sermon on the ‘Mount,” which isn’t bad for a show that “hasn’t been relevant in over 20 years,” according to its best promoter.
In the first South Park episode in over two years, Trey Parker and Matt Stone broke out the big guns as they ruthlessly roasted both President Donald Trump and their parent company, Paramount Global, which capitulated to the litigious leader in a $16 million settlement that set a dangerous precedent for the media industry. With “Sermon on the ‘Mount,” South Park called Trump as a small-dicked, Middle-Eastern dictator who launches frivolous lawsuits to silence critics of his unconstitutional regime, and they slammed Paramount for playing ball with America’s Saddam Hussein just to push through its acquisition deal with David Ellison’s company Skydance Media.

1988’s The Naked Gun, from the Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker team, are rightly revered as parody classics. They are also, it has to be said, relics of a bygone era: when comedy films still ruled the roost, when spoof was a genre in rude health, when it hadn’t been weakened by years of cheap knock-offs and straight-to-streaming slop. Comedy, the received wisdom goes, does not belong in a cinema anymore.
Perhaps conscious of this pressure, The Naked Gun, 2025 edition, opens a little hesitantly, with an action scene introducing Detective Frank Drebin Jr (Liam Neeson), son of the original Drebin (Leslie Nielsen), disguised as a schoolgirl. The sequence doffs a cap to the original 1988 film’s effortlessly enjoyable pre-titles fight, without quite matching its fluidity or funnies. But the good thing about a film like this is, if you're not vibing with one joke, you don’t have to wait long for another one to come along.

Weird Al Yankovic has spoken about the difficulty of writing parody songs after the end of monoculture. Speaking to Billboard recently he was positive about fans being able to listen to exactly what they're into, but the difficulty he faces because his work relies on audiences being familiar with the same material. It's an element that's affected parody films too. That it's been 12 years since Scary Movie 5 isn't down to a lack of things to steal.
The Naked Gun is a comedy that relies more on genre parody rather than spoofing an individual film. Tom Lehrer, the musical comedy legend, mathematician and political satirist, has died at 97.
He passed away July 26 at his home in Cambridge, Massachusetts, according to his longtime friend David Herder. No cause of death was given.
Lehrer was much beloved for his humorous and often darkly satiric musical numbers such as “Poisoning Pigeons in the Park” and “The Vatican Rag,” which poked fun at mid-20th century America and the wider world, reaching the height of his fame in the 1950s and ’60s.
He usually would perform by accompanying himself on the piano in a light, Broadway showtune style and with a cheeky grin on his face. His style is best described in his popular saying, “Always predict the worst, and you’ll be hailed as a prophet.”
Toy Story music composer Randy Newman is among those to cite his influence on them, while he also had an impact on newer generations.

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert has never won an Emmy, and depending on who you ask, that’s well deserved. The program has been nominated for 33 awards since 2015, but again, it’s never actually taken one home. That losing streak is probably coming to an end. Colbert has become an overnight symbol of Liberal resistance after his show was canceled by CBS under dubious circumstances. Jon Stewart categorized the decision as the “path of least resistance,” a way to ease Paramount’s financial burdens and gain favor with Donald Trump under the new merger deal with Skydance.
There’s been no shortage of outrage over the end of Colbert, which is scheduled to go off the air when his contract ends with the network in 2026. I mean, for his Monday night taping, Colbert assembled every white comedian over the age of 40 to rally around him. It was a who...

You’ll never find me agreeing with Trump cronies. But even I can admit when someone isn’t wrong. In the case of Federal Communications Commission Chair Brendan Carr, his dubious response to the liberal reaction to Colbert’s cancellation was exactly that: not wrong.
In a post on X, Carr wrote: “The partisan left’s ritualist wailing and gnashing of teeth over Colbert is quite revealing. They’re acting like they’re losing a loyal DNC spokesperson that was entitled to an exemption from the laws of economics.”
And while the jury is still out on whether CBS canned Colbert because of an alleged $40 million annual deficit, a desire to earn Trump’s favor, or — most likely — a combination of both, the outcry over The Late Show ending has been apocalyptic. The Late Show with Stephen Colbert had some surprise guests stop by the Ed Sullivan Theater to show their support for the host. Visits from late-night TV hosts, Saturday Night Live alumni, and more brought a much different energy to the show.
Colbert began his show on Monday night with a monologue that addressed the elephant in the room. Yes, Paramount really did cancel The Late Show, and Colbert will be out of a job in 10 months. But the comedian also used the time to directly address President Donald Trump, saying "go f**k yourself" to the man many believe had a hand in ending Colbert's late-night TV run.
But things found a much more positive vibe later in the program. Colbert admitted he didn't want the show to cause fear or anxiety among fans saddened by Paramount's decision. So to help change the mood, Colbert called in a few favors.

The timing of the cancellation has faced scrutiny. It comes as Paramount, the owner of CBS, is attempting to merge with Skydance. It has been argued that the cancellation of Colbert, who is a vocal critic of the Trump administration, is a way to curry favor and ensure the merger gets the green light. CBS executives have denied any outside influence.
Colbert came out swinging in his monologue, nonetheless. But, as shown in a video from The Late Show's official YouTube channel, one of the more unexpected moments of the episode came when Weird Al and Lin-Manuel Miranda...

Stephen Colbert may not be thrilled about the impending cancellation of The Late Show, but he is truly gleeful about being able to say whatever he wants while hosting for the next 10 months.
Addressing his audience on the late-night show on Monday night, Colbert declared, “Cancel culture has gone too far.” He recounted how CBS announced last week that The Late Show will be coming to an end in May.

The cancellation of Late Show With Stephen Colbert happened less than a week ago, but already the news cycle has taken multiple wild turns. Colbert delivered the news in a very measured and gracious way at the top of last Thursday’s episode. President Trump apparently had nothing more pressing to do Friday morning than gloat about it. Then anonymous CBS spokespersons tried to push back on the narrative that Colbert had been fired and that the show was cancelled for political reasons related to the long-gestating purchase of CBS’ parent company Paramount by Skydance Entertainment, leaking that The Late Show loses a reported $40 million to $50 million each year. Colbert was back Monday night for the first time since this figure hit the press, and he seemed pretty dubious about it, particularly since the show is #1 in the late-night ratings.
“Forty million’s a big number,” said Colbert in his opening monologue.

The cancellation of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert emerged last week like a dagger through the heart of late-night TV.
Would others be next? How would Colbert’s friends fare if the most-watched show in late-night can be axed for “financial reasons”?
Well, they turned up for him, literally.
Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers, John Oliver, Jon Stewart and Andy Cohen all appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Monday. They were joined by a slew of other stars including Adam Sandler, Anderson Cooper, Weird Al Yankovic, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Robert Smigel.
The gag started with Miranda and Weird Al coming out to perform a song – a Coldplay song, in fact, a reference to the Astronomer scandal, which saw the CEO resigning after getting caught with the company’s Hr chief on a kiss-cam at a recent concert from Chris Martin’s band.

“Weird Al” Yankovic is currently traveling the continent with his “Bigger & Weirder” tour, playing hits like “Amish Paradise” to stadium-sized crowds full of Hawaiian shirt-clad fans.
Since the show requires the legendary song parodist to undergo a number of costume changes, each concert fills the excess time with clips from Yankovic’s long career, including scenes from movies like Uhf and The Naked Gun, sketches from his short-lived children’s show and even archival “interviews” with music icons like Paul McCartney.
The highlight reels also feature memorable pop-culture references to Al from shows like Jeopardy! and Family Guy — the latter memorably used “Eat It” in the least family-friendly context imaginable.
Having been to a recent show, I can personally attest that one of the biggest applause breaks of the night wasn’t for Yankovic himself, but rather, for the appearance of Hank and Bobby Hill.

Jurassic World: Rebirth stomps into theaters this holiday weekend, looking to sink its teeth into the July 4 box office and revitalize a franchise that even the most dedicated dino-heads would agree is starting to feel a little prehistoric. Starring Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, and Mahershala Ali, the seventh film in the Jurassic series unfolds on a new island where dinosaurs roam freely... and humans are prey.
While the Rebirth reviews are mixed, the movie posted a $28 million opening day, with a projected $127.5 million gross over the four-day weekend. The Rotten Tomatoes audience scores are also coming in a smidgen higher than the Tomatometer, indicating that these digitally enhanced dinosaurs continue to be a big summer movie draw.
But Jurassic still seems like a franchise in need of some fresh creative DNA. And, as it happens, a bold new direction emerged in the early 2000s from an unlikely source — Oscar-nominated screenwriter...

Don’t expect to see Madonna perform “Like A Surgeon” in concert anytime soon, the “Weird Al” Yankovic parody of her 1984 megahit, “Like A Virgin.” But in addition to feeling flattered by pop’s most prominent parodist, the original artists have occasionally played along on “Weird Al” versions of their greatest hits.

Judging from the trailers, the upcoming Naked Gun reboot is seemingly going to be chock-full of references to the original movie trilogy, up to and including a brief, photographic cameo from late accused murderer/prank show auteur O.J. Simpson.
But will the new movie include an appearance from the one living celebrity who’s been in every other installment of the Naked Gun series and wasn’t married to Elvis?
As you may remember, early in 1988’s The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!, Frank returns from his jurisdictionally-questionable trip to Beirut and discovers a crowd of reporters and fans waiting for him at the airport. But after addressing the spectators, Frank is informed that they’re actually there to greet his fellow passenger: “Weird Al” Yankovic.

There are exactly two types of music fans in America, and the easiest way to figure out which type you are is to complete the following lyric: “A long, long time ago…”
Despite the fact that parody is a protected form of free speech in these United States, the greatest parody artist in American history, Alfred Matthew “Weird Al” Yankovic, makes a point to try to secure the blessing of every A-list artist whose biggest hits he satirizes. Over his nearly 50-year career, Weird Al has earned the approval of music industry titans such as Michael Jackson and Madonna, but, arguably, his biggest accomplishment might be how he didn’t just secure Don McLean’s permission to parody his iconic 1971 folk rock anthem “American Pie,” but he even convinced the songwriting legend that Buddy Holly was a lesser inspiration than Anakin Skywalker.

Most celebrity musicians are tickled to get the “Weird Al” Yankovic experience, watching their most popular songs become goofy parodies such as “Eat It” or “Like A Surgeon.” But as “Weird Al” told Jimmy Fallon last night, not every artist is down to be clowned.
“Was there ever a white whale of parody songs?” Fallon wondered. An artist whom Yankovic wanted to spoof who never gave him the chance?
“Prince is like the one guy that was never into it,” the comedian revealed.
The weird thing, as it were, was that Prince was a fan of other “Weird Al” songs. “In fact, I heard a bootleg recording of him in the studio talking to some friends,” Yankovic said, remembering Prince laughing at “Fat,” his parody of Michael Jackson’s “Bad.” “He makes fun of Michael Jackson. It's really funny.”

“I’ve seen that,” added Fallon about a video that has 87 million views on YouTube.

Daniel Radcliffe will forever be known as Harry Potter, even now HBO has cast Dominic McLaughlin to play Harry in the new TV series based on the "Harry Potter" book series. Before he was cast in the Warner Bros. movie franchise, though, Radcliffe made his movie debut with a bit part in an early 2000s spy film. Indeed, not only did Radcliffe appear in a spy flick, but he also got to appear alongside cinematic spy royalty in the form of Pierce Brosnan.
That said, Radcliffe didn't share the screen with Brosnan in a Bond movie. Rather, he co-starred in 2001's "The Tailor of Panama," a spy thriller that saw Brosnan playing a different womanizing, morally dubious MI6 agent. Along with Brosnan and Radcliffe, the movie also starred the Oscar-winning Geoffrey Rush, who's best known for his roles in films like "The King's Speech" and the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies,...

Musician and producer Rick Derringer has died at the age of 77. Derringer is remembered for his work across a variety of genres. With his band, The McCoys, he recorded the iconic 1960s rock track "Hang On Sloopy," and he would go on to work with 1980s icons Hulk Hogan and Weird Al Yankovic. The Associated Press reports that Derringer's death was announced by his caretaker, Tony Wilson; no cause of death was given.
Derringer was born Richard Zehringer on August 5, 1947, in Celina, Ohio. Rick Derringer, who had a No. 1 hit with The McCoys in “Hang on Sloopy,” created a classic rock staple in “Rock and Roll, Hootchie Koo,” produced the Edgar Winter Group’s hit “Frankenstein” and songs for “Weird” Al Yankovic, died Monday. He was 77.
A family spokesman announced the news on social media, but did not provide a cause or other details. His wife and longtime bandmate, Jenda Derringer, noted in February that her husband had angioplasty for two blockages in his leg that was followed by surgery and complications. She also said he had Type 2 diabetes.
Born Richard Zehringer on August 5, 1947, in Celina, Ohio, Derringer was 17 when his band The McCoys opened for The Strangeloves, who picked the young group to record its song “My Girl Sloopy.” Derringer had the title and lyrics changed, and with its loping rhythm and singalong chorus “Hang on Sloopy” hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in early October.

When this year’s inductees into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame were announced, it included legends and pop/rock icons like Chubby Checker, Soundgarden and Cyndi Lauper. But it just wasn’t weird enough. So, come on, it’s time to ask: Why isn’t “Weird Al” Yankovic in the hall of fame?
Joining in the campaign to get Weird Al inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is John Mulaney, who brought up His Weirdness when chatting about this year’s inductees. Speaking about Chubby Checker’s induction specifically, Mulaney noted that there is some humor to it. “Knowing that it was part novelty I think is great. I’m a big proponent of novelty music. I’m a big proponent of “Weird Al” getting into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. This is one step closer, though I don’t know why they need to be led via steps.

John Mulaney has learned a few things about life from the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. This sounds like the setup for a joke. But the comedian, late-night host, and low-key music obsessive has long been fascinated with the Cleveland institution, the artists it deems worthy for inclusion (or continually snubs), and especially the annual induction ceremony that can reunite bands, rekindle old feuds, and cause music nerds to argue endlessly.

2025 marks the 20th anniversary of Lucasfilm Animation, and the company commemorated its anniversary with a new poster, which was unveiled at Star Wars Celebration in Shiba, Japan. While the poster mostly celebrates their successful projects, there's also a hidden reference to a Star Wars project that will probably never see the light of day. Star Wars: Detours, an animated comedy series from the Robot Chicken team, is referenced on the poster, making it the first time it's been officially acknowledged in years.
The poster features characters from all of Lucasfilm Animation's popular Star Wars series, from The Clone Wars to Rebels to Resistance, but appropriately enough for this weekend, there's a hidden Easter egg for one of the most obscure Star Wars animated series. If you look closely in the bottom right corner of the poster, you'll see a Stormtrooper with a giant head and comical goggle-eyes, taken directly from the long-lost animated series.

Coachella is known for hosting some of the biggest headliners for music festivals, but they also find room for more unique acts. This year, Yo Gabba Gabba!, the band from the titular children’s show, performed at the Mojave Tent, and brought on a slew of guests, including “Weird Al” Yankovic for his debut performance at the Indio festival.
“Weird Al” joined Ygg! for their final song, a cover of The Muppets’ “Rainbow Connection” which received a roar of applause at its end from the crowd. “Weird Al” wasn’t the only guest for the cover though: Portugal the Man., Thundercat, and Paul Williams, who co-wrote the 1978 song made an appearance, too.

This past weekend, “Weird Al” Yankovic took the stage during a performance by the Australian children’s musical comedy act Yo Gabba Gabba! at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival just in case any of the lost twenty-somethings who showed up to the set didn’t already think that they were hallucinating.
Right now, the fun-loving, festival-faring, parentally subsidized young people of Southern California are nursing their hangovers with Erewhon smoothies and sweating out this past weekend’s festivities in Equinox steam rooms upon their return to Los Angeles during the intermission of Coachella 2025. With the first weekend of the world-famous music festival in the books, music fans and music journalists alike now take their much-needed respite before the desert mega-party begins again on Friday, and, somewhere in the USC dorms, there is at least one group of undergrads who are currently asking each other questions like, “Who was...

Halfway through Green Day’s headlining set on the second day of this year’s Coachella Music and Arts Festival, frontman Billie Joe Armstrong asked the audience if it was their first time at Coachella.
When about half responded with a roar, Armstrong responded with a white lie: “It’s my first Coachella too!” Actually, it was more than a white lie: Armstrong performed a historic set at the Outdoor Theater on the Polo Field in 2014, filling in as frontman for the then-reunited Replacements while singer Paul Westerberg watched from a couch onstage.
That night, a small smattering of hardcore alt-rock fans watched Armstrong fulfill his own cult-hero fantasies. Last night, a throng many tens of thousands deeper saw Armstrong and his main band fulfill their destiny as the holders of rock’s eternal flame. As the only announced rock headliner in the festival’s post-covid era (Blink-182 were a...
