Teddy Wilson in M*A*S*H (1972)

Teddy Wilson

The Hunter

Steve McQueen’s final film is an action-comedy compromise that will satisfy his fans even if it barely hangs together. The thrills are kinder & gentler, with plenty of hair-raising stunts but less gunplay and gore. McQueen’s eccentric bounty hunter collects toys and can barely drive a car, but he always gets his man. Kathryn Harrold is good; Eli Wallach, LeVar Burton, Ben Johnson, Richard Venture and Tracey Walter are along for the ride (and stay out of Steve’s spotlight). Steve’s in charge — he tailors everything to highlight his quirky star characterization, and the guiding principle is ‘low key.’

Beer Company BrewDog Debuts Streaming-Video Service in Latest Niche Svod Move
Netflix has been spending money on streaming-video content like, well, a drunken sailor. Now comes a subscription VOD product from a Scottish beer-brewing company that’s geared around a tippling lifestyle — with a show lineup that includes such fare as “Are You Smarter Than a Drunk Person?” and “Four Sheets.”

Indie brewery BrewDog is launching the BrewDog Network, with several hundred hours of programming spanning craft beer, cocktails, food, travel, comedy, game shows, and documentaries. The Svod service, priced at $4.99 monthly, features 14 original series at launch, including “The BrewDog Show,” a reboot of the TV series that previously aired on NBCUniversal’s Esquire Network (which shut down in early 2017).

The Svod service is available worldwide on Android and iOS devices and online at brewdognetwork.com. The five-bucks-per-month fee, the company noted, is less than the price of a pint of its beer.

The new “BrewDog Show” features James Watt (above...

Maria Howell to Play Seeder in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire
Last week we got word that E. Roger Mitchell would be portraying District 11 tribute Chaff in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, and now we know who's playing his partner, Seeder. Read on for the details, and look for more soon. Just 13 more tributes to go!

The part of Seeder has gone to Maria Howell, an actor, singer, and voiceover artist.

Per The Hunger Games on Facebook, Howell has appeared in Lifetime’s hit shows “Army Wives” and “Drop Dead Diva”, The CW’s “The Vampire Diaries”, Fox’s “Past Life”, and more as well as the acclaimed theatrical release The Blind Side, starring Sandra Bullock. Star Trek: The Next Generation Cast to Reunite at Calgary Expo
2012 marks the 25th anniversary of the premiere of Star Trek: The Next Generation. For those of us who were around back then, there was genuine concern that it would only air for one season, so we taped, on videocassettes on our VCRs (ask your parents), every episode just in case each one would only air once. Happily we were wrong, and the series went on for a total of seven seasons, not to mention being the basis for four Star Trek movies.

In honor of the anniversary, the Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo will have a number of special events, the biggest of which will be “Star Trek Tng EXPOsed,” a panel featuring all nine of the original cast members. Tickets go on sale soon; here’s the press release:

Original Cast Of Star Trek: The Next Generation® will be coming together for a special reunion at the Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo April 27-29, 2012 in Calgary,...

Peter Cullen, Shia LaBeouf, and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley in Transformers: El lado oscuro de la Luna (2011)
Early Buzz: ‘Transformers: Dark of the Moon’
Peter Cullen, Shia LaBeouf, and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley in Transformers: El lado oscuro de la Luna (2011)
[1] Michael Bay's Transformers: Dark of the Moon premiered this week at the Moscow Film Festival, and the first reviews have begun to appear online. What did people think of the film? Was it better than Revenge of the Fallen? Does it surpass the first film? Is this the first live-action film worth seeing in 3D since Avatar? I've compiled links to the first wave of reviews, and printed excerpts after the jump. Harry Knowles on AICN [2]: "Transformers: Dark Of The Moon is simply the best film of the franchise – by a great deal." .... "this film is astonishing to watch in 3D. Easily the best 3D since Avatar - and in many respects I think it is superior." ... "Personally, I'm looking forward to checking out the 3D again - that last hour is just jaw-dropping." ... "After I saw the film, my brain felt tired. Not from great thoughts, but...

Read Michael Bay’s Projectionist Plea For ‘Transformers: Dark of the Moon,’ But Will It Deliver?
The internet was abuzz last week when Michael Bay took it upon himself to coerce and instruct projectionists to present his blockbuster baby Transformers: Dark of the Moon in the highest brightness possible. The director and his crew seem to be spewing every chance about its technical merits. Its star Shia Labeouf (who is known for saying whatever audiences want to hear) told the La Times that “it’s the greatest 3-D film ever made.” Is he lying or could this be true after the abysmal Revenge of the Fallen?

The review embargo lifts tomorrow (when I’ll be seeing it), but I’ve rounded up any impressions I could get my hands on below. Deadline also has the actual letter Bay sent to projectionists. Check it out below, followed by impressions of the film.

Before we get to those reviews and impressions, Michael Bay has also posted a letter...

Shatner Tells Fans He’s Not in the Next ‘Star Trek’
William Shatner at the 2011 Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo (image copyright Michael Simpson)

With much mystery still surrounding the follow-up to J.J. Abrams Star Trek reboot (we khan’t bring ourselves to call it Star Trek 2), one question that keeps going around is whether William Shatner will be making an appearance as the original (or should that be alternate?) James T. Kirk.

‘No,’ is the word from the man himself. Shatner said as much during a Q&A session hosted by Canada’s Space channel at last weekend’s Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo. He was answering a fan’s question about whether he thought he would be in the next movie.

“I’ve become an acquaintance of J.J. Abrams—what a talented guy—and he never mentioned, ‘Get yourself ready; you’re going to be in the next movie,’… [So] no.”

Earlier in the session Shatner commented on his...

Video: Sandman's Neil Gaiman Talks Dr Who "Doctor's Wife!"
At WonderCon Teddy Wilson interviewed Neil Gaiman about his upcoming Dr Who episode “The Doctor’s Wife” which is the fourth episode from Season 6. Gaiman and Dr Who fans now have details from this special episode. "In my episode I got to be really proud because I got to write scenes where Matt got to be vulnerable and I got to write scenes in which Matt got to be disturbed and upset and experience things that The Doctor doesn't normally get to experience and Matt breaks your heart, he's just wonderful." LEEE777 - This I've got to say is the one episode I'm really looking forward to in this new BBC series of Dr Who.

Sir George Shearing obituary
One of the great jazz pianists and bandleaders, he wrote Lullaby of Birdland

The pianist George Shearing, who has died aged 91 of heart failure, was the first postwar British jazz musician to move permanently to the Us and build a solid career there, effectively clearing the way for a host of other players to follow the same path. This was in 1947, at a time when Shearing and his countrymen, prevented by a Musicians' Union embargo from hearing the best American musicians in person, tended to regard these stars as supermen, wearing out their recordings, yet never imagining that it might be possible to perform alongside them in New York. However, Shearing put such negative thoughts aside and took the decision to emigrate.

His success was speedy and spectacular. By 1949, he had hit on the formula that brought him worldwide fame and colossal record sales, forming his quintet, later a sextet,...

We’ll see you next week for the thrilling conclusion! And stay tuned for a very special Gnd-related announcement coming soon.
