Amazon is set to have a reimagining of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang with Matthew Warchus at the helm
Image
Dick Van Dyke is leaving people in awe by appearing in Coldplay’s new video, “All My Love,” in which the 98 year old shows that he’s still got a spring in his step by dancing in the music video. The song is interspersed with interview snippets, with the actor offering the words of wisdom that we have come to love from Dick Van Dyke. In one scene, he states, “I’m acutely aware that I could go any day now, but I don’t know why it doesn’t concern me. I’m not afraid of it. I have that feeling – totally against anything intellectual – that I’m going to be alright.” One of Dyke’s most beloved family films, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, is now set to have a reimagining over at Prime Video. Deadline reports that the new incarnation has now tapped Matthew Warchus to direct. Warchus...

Matthew Warchus Set To Direct Amazon’s ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’ Reimagining; Enda Walsh Scripting
Image
Matthew Warchus (Matilda: The Musical) is set to direct the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang reimagining in the works from Amazon MGM Studios and Eon Productions, Amazon said Thursday.

Warchus will work from a script by Enda Walsh (Small Things Like These). The film, which Deadline told you about first, is in early stages of development and builds on Eon and Amazon MGM’s partnership on the James Bond franchise.

Originally conceived by Bond author Ian Fleming as a bedtime story for his son Casper, his 1964 novel Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was previously adapted into a 1967 film directed by Ken Hughes off a script by Roald Dahl, Hughes and Richard Maibaum. The story is a whimsical family adventure following inventor Caractacus Potts (Dick Van Dyke), his two children and Truly Scrumptious (Sally Anne Howes) — daughter of candy factory owner Lord Scrumptious (James Robertson Justice)— as they restore an old car, which...

'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang' Remake Coming from Amazon MGM Studios
Image
Everyone's favorite eccentric, widowed inventor is about to be back in the driver's seat of the most idiosyncratic flying car you've ever encountered. If you just read those words and thought "huh?" then you clearly were not raised on the iconic film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, which is in the early stages of being remade by Amazon MGM Studios.

In exclusive new reporting from Deadline, it appears that Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson's Eon Productions are in the early stages of development on the film alongside the aforementioned Amazon. If the names Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson sound familiar, it's likely due to their work in the James Bond universe, which has a unique — and perhaps even surprising — connection to the 1968 film.

How Is 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang' Connected to James Bond and Roald Dahl?

You see, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang: The Magical Car was originally a...

James Bond Producers Rebooting Oscar-Nominated 56-Year-Old Film
Image
A classic film is about to get rebooted just a few years ahead of its 60th anniversary. The reboot will be a collaboration between Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson's Eon Productions and Amazon MGM Studios.

Per Deadline, it has been revealed that a reimagined version of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is in development. The project, which is planned for a theatrical release, continues the collaboration between Eon Productions and Amazon MGM Studios, expanding from the partnership the two have on the James Bond franchise. The Chitty Chitty Bang Bang reboot is reportedly in its early stages without a screenwriter or director yet attached, but meetings are said to be ongoing with potential filmmakers.

The Only Major Actors Still Alive From Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
Image
Ian Fleming is perhaps best known for being the creator of James Bond and the series of novels that center the character, but he's also the mind behind the 1964 children's novel "Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang: The Magical Car," which was subsequently turned into the beloved, Academy Award-nominated fantasy movie musical and later, a stage musical. The story focuses on the Potts family, namely, siblings Jeremy and Jemima, who desperately try to set up their widowed inventor father Caractacus with a beautiful woman named Truly Scrumptious. And people had the audacity to make fun of the character names in "The Hunger Games" series? Tsk. Tsk. During a day at the beach, Caractacus tells the children a fantastical tale about the villainous Baron Bomburst, the tyrant ruler of the land of Vulgaria, and his attempts to steal their magical family car, the titular Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

"Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" is a whimsical story through and through,...

Tony Awards flashback to 1963: A not so funny thing happened to Stephen Sondheim
Image
What do the 76th annual Tonys have in common with the 17th annual awards?

Stephen Sondheim.

The late, great influential composer is represented in this year’s Tonys with the acclaimed, popular revivals of his 1979 classic “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Street” earning eight nominations and 1987’s “Into the Woods” receiving six.

Sixty years ago, it was Sondheim’s musical comedy “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” which dominated the Tony Awards with six wins: best musical, best producer for Harold Prince, best director for George Abbott, best author for Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart, leading actor for Zero Mostel and featured actor for David Burns. Ironically, Sondheim failed to earn a nomination for best original score (music and/or lyrics) written for the theater. He would not win for his tunes until “Company” in 1971. Vying in that category were “Stop the World I Wanted...

A Hard Day’s Night 4K
Image
The Fab Four’s first and biggest movie hit comes to 4K Ultra HD! The Beatles brought something new and exciting to 1964 and the world embraced it. This United Artists release was a major event in the first wave of Beatlemania, setting the standard for Swinging London cool; thanks to Richard Lester’s flip approach and the Beatles’ positive energy little in the movie has dated. George Martin’s input for the musical end of things didn’t hurt either. The movie itself never gets old: new generations still respond with enthusiasm. It always looked super on home video, so what does the format boost add to the mix?

S.O.S. Titanic
Image
TV’s 1979 Titanic movie comes to Blu in two versions. We liked it when new but didn’t care for the cut-down theatrical version that hit DVD in 2002. Kino’s disc completes a set of various film versions of the infamous 1912 disaster, and allows us the chance for a Titanic ‘battle of the bands’ — we’ll rate them from several criteria. The filmed-in-England production has a nicely-chosen soap opera cast: David Janssen, Cloris Leachman, Ian Holm, Helen Mirren, Anna Quayle, David Warner, Susan Saint James, Harry Andrews.

Anna Quayle obituary
Multitalented actor best remembered as Baroness Bomburst in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

Anna Quayle, who has died aged 86, was a multitalented and versatile actor with saucer eyes, a flirtatious smile and a sardonic touch. She could be both playful and deadpan, and was as adept at a sly aside as she was at delivering a musical number with wit and gusto, whether on stage, film or TV.

It was as the unforgettable Baroness Bomburst in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968) that she broke through on the big screen, duetting with Gert Fröbe on the number Chu-Chi Face, where the couple declare undying love for each other as he attempts to kill her by various slapstick means.
