Joaquin Phoenix
Daring or dire? Guardian readers on Joker: Folie à Deux
Joaquin Phoenix
Todd Phillips’ superhero sequel might have been a box-office flop, but some readers see a lot to cherish in the performances of Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga

I thought that this was a daring, subversive, melancholic and thought provoking film. Phillips’ decision to avoid simply churning out a repeat of the first film is admirable and Joaquin Phoenix adds more layers to the character of Arthur Fleck. Lady Gaga was captivating as Harley Quinn and together the two leads offer a compelling portrait of loneliness, yearning and human frailty. Once again, Hildur Guðnadóttir’s masterful score adds gravitas and underlines the despair at play. It’s certainly not a perfect film, but its ambition should be applauded and I’m really surprised by the coverage it has received. I’m sure it will come to be seen in a more positive light. Watch The Trailer For Wales' First Action Film Kamikaze
About this time last year we let you know that stuntman Marcus Shakesheff got the bright idea to head into Wales and make the action movie, Kamikaze. It would be the first action film ever shot in Wales and also marks Shakesheff's directorial debut. A modern film that pays homage to the 80s era of action movies. The film is inspired by the great action movies of Jackie Chan, Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis. It's a fast paced action movie, with bits of humor along the way. Evan Reed is an ex M.I.6 agent who has become a mercenary for hire. Evan is hired by Cabinet Minister David Markham, to steal files containing incriminating evidence linking the MP to weapons contractors. After the mission Markham...

Roger Lloyd Pack obituary
Stage and screen actor best known for his roles in Only Fools and Horses, The Vicar of Dibley and Harry Potter

The talented and idiosyncratic character actor Roger Lloyd Pack, who has died of pancreatic cancer aged 69, achieved national recognition, and huge popularity, as Colin "Trigger" Ball, the lugubrious Peckham road sweeper in John Sullivan's brilliantly acted comedy series Only Fools and Horses. He appeared alongside David Jason's Del Boy and Nicholas Lyndhurst's "plonker" Rodney from 1981 for 10 years, with many a seasonal "special" for another decade.

This success cemented a career in which, up to that point, he had played important roles at the Royal Shakespeare Company, the National Theatre and the Almeida theatre in north London – he was a notably anguished Rosmer in Ibsen's Rosmersholm at the National in 1987, opposite Suzanne Bertish – without recognition any wider than usually appreciative reviews.

His enhanced status led to another...

Roger Lloyd Pack, Trigger in Only Fools and Horses, dies
Actor's TV work included The Vicar of Dibley, while he also featured in films including Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Roger Lloyd Pack, the Only Fools and Horses and Harry Potter actor, has died aged 69, his agent confirmed on Thursday.

His agent, Maureen Vincent, said he had pancreatic cancer and had "died at home surrounded by his family".

Best known for his TV work, including his popular character Trigger in the late John Sullivan's long-running BBC1 sitcom and Owen Newitt in The Vicar of Dibley, Lloyd Pack also featured in films including Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, as Barty Crouch Sr.

Other film work in recent years included Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy and Dagenham Girls.

Lloyd Pack was also an accomplished stage actor, playing the Duke of Buckingham in a production of Richard III at the Globe Theatre in 2011 and last year taking on Sir Andrew Aguecheek in Twelfth Night.

BFI’s Truffaut Season: ‘Day For Night’
“This is essentially a story of human frailties and foibles — all wrapped up in a lovely package and scored by the great Georges Delerue”.

Day for Night (La Nuit Américaine)

Directed by François Truffaut

Written by François Truffaut

France, 1973

A clutch of in-jokes and a plethora of film references punctuate François Truffaut’s Day for Night, an insider’s view of movies and the people who make them. A decade earlier, Jean-Luc Godard directed Contempt/Le Mépris (1963), a dazzlingly shot but frustratingly opaque anti-love story, that’s also stuffed full of cinematic bric-a-brac. But while Godard gives you a semi-nude Brigitte Bardot, philosophical ramblings and (let’s be honest) a bit a of a headache, fellow New Wave auteur Truffaut just wants to enfold you in his warm and distinctly Gallic embrace.

Even if you suffer from subtitle phobia, or harbour a sneaking suspicion that the leading lights of the...
