The Best Sci-Fi TV Shows to Watch if You Liked Fallout
Image
Prime Video's latest series, Fallout, has been one of their biggest shows, impressing audiences with its deep storytelling and incredible world-building. The program follows a group of survivors in a post-apocalyptic Los Angeles, which has been ravaged by a nuclear war, living underground to avoid the threat of radiation sickness, as well as mutants, and bandits. Audiences enjoying Fallout would also be wise to check out these other shows, that have equally excelled in the sci-fi genre.

These sci-fi series are perfect for Fallout fans, following similar themes to Prime Video's latest offering. They either capture an almost identical tone to Fallout, reflecting the series' same dire sense of hopelessness in the wake of a devastating conflict, or represent the same strong commitment to building an expansive world.

Jackson Returns! Two-Time Oscar Winner and Former Labour MP to Star in Zola Adaptation
Glenda Jackson: Actress and former Labour MP. Two-time Oscar winner and former Labour MP Glenda Jackson returns to acting Two-time Best Actress Academy Award winner Glenda Jackson set aside her acting career after becoming a Labour Party MP in 1992. Four years ago, Jackson, who represented the Greater London constituency of Hampstead and Highgate, announced that she would stand down the 2015 general election – which, somewhat controversially, was won by right-wing prime minister David Cameron's Conservative party.[1] The silver lining: following a two-decade-plus break, Glenda Jackson is returning to acting. Now, Jackson isn't – for the time being – returning to acting in front of the camera. The 79-year-old is to be featured in the Radio 4 series Emile Zola: Blood, Sex and Money, described on their website as a “mash-up” adaptation of 20 Emile Zola novels collectively known as "Les Rougon-Macquart."[2] Part 1 of the three-part Radio 4 series will be broadcast daily during an...

New on Acorn DVD: Martin Clunes, George Gently and Prunella Scales
Inspector George Gently

The latest batch of George Gently episodes come to DVD on 1 April and you’d be a fool to miss out on this boxset. As you will recall, season five ended with Gently and Bacchus, shot and wounded on the floor of Durham Cathedral. Would they recover? Would they ever work again? Well given that there is a season six I don’t think you can accuse me of releasing a “spoiler” if I tell you that the duo made a full recovery. However, it wasn’t an easy road, especially for Bacchus whose wallowing in self-pity eventually led him down an unhealthy path of booze and gambling. Older and wiser, Gently realized that work was the best therapy and he quickly got back to doing what he does best — solving murders.

Even by George Gently‘s own standards, season six features a lot of introspection as...

The Syndicate Series 1

The Syndicate, Series One is the pick of Acorn Media’s late April DVD releases. The show is a fascinating character study involving the mundane staff members of a humdrum low-end British supermarket. In the normal course of events, there is nothing particularly intriguing about this group but that all changes when they win the national lottery. When millions of pounds are involved, personal relationships, work rivalries and previously undetected misdeeds suddenly become a lot more important. While the show doesn’t exactly portray the lottery as a bad thing, let’s just say that Kay Mellor’s scripts show us that every silver lining has a massive dark cloud attached to it.

The cast for The Syndicate is top notch and the biggest star among the talented ensemble is Harry Potter actor Timothy Spall. He plays the store manager Bob.

New Acorn Releases in 2013: Lillie, La Plante and Dr Zhivago
Dr Zhivago

By Kieran Kinsella

British TV specialists Acorn Media have decided to capitalize on the wintery weather by releasing the critically acclaimed 2003 version of Boris Pasternak’s snow swept epic Dr Zhivago. This 2 disc set is for mature audiences only and includes the unedited UK version of the 225 minute revolutionary drama. Additionally, the box set includes 70 minutes of behind-the-scenes footage including cast interviews, and you also get a mini-biography of Pasternak.

As an avid fan of the 1965 film version of this same book, I was a little bit skeptical when I first heard about the small screen version. However, my fears were without foundation as this ITV production is just as enthralling as David Lean’s version and many people would argue that it is also closer to Pasternak’s book. That being said, BBC veteran writer Andrew Davies does a very good job of converting the wordy dialogue...

June 2012 New DVD Reviews: Foyle’s War, Poirot and Love in a Cold Climate
Foyle's War

By Kieran Kinsella

Earlier this year Acorn Media bought the rights to the British detective series Foyle’s War. The cast and crew are currently working on a new series of the war time drama but in the interim Acorn Media have put together a new DVD box set of the Best of Foyle’s War.

The show centers around Detective Chief Inspector Foyle who is doing his best ignore the ravages of war and focus on solving grizzly crimes. Michael Kitchen plays the lead role and he is in the mold of classic British actors and he is well suited to playing the stiff upper lipped Dci Foyle. Kitchen apparently selected the six stories that are featured in the six disc set. The cast involvement in the DVD doesn’t end there. Kitchen’s cast mates Honeysuckle Weeks and Anthony Howell both sat down with Acorn for...

Doctor Who: The Awakening - DVD Review
The Awakening is a short trip, but an effective one for its short running time - although it does have an ever-so-quick wrap-up. The special effects department also got some recognition from an unlikely source culled from my fandom memory. The Doctor (Peter Davison), Turlough (Mark Strickson), and Tegan (Janet Fielding) land the Tardis in the village of Little Hodcombe to visit Tegan.s grandfather Andrew Verney (Frederick Hall). They were supposed to be in 1984 but soon find that people are running about in 1643 garb. Has the Tardis miscalculated? No, Sir George Hutchinson (Denis Lill) is recreating a battle that occurred in the village and playing dress-up war games and school teacher Jane Hampden (Polly James)...

Doctor Who complete reviews: The Awakening
Tradition's a funny old thing, isn't it? For no good reason some people cling to the same old routines year in year out, like some moth-eaten comfort blanket. How else can you exlain the horror that is New Year's Eve - Aka The Most Pointless Event In The Yearly Calendar. The same old boring routine: Paying extortionate amounts for a pub or restaurant ticket and thus being unable to move from a fixed position because of the crowds. Or staying in at home and getting annoyed when someone wants to watch Roland Rat soundalike Jools Holland and his annual festive self-indulgent flatulence. And then Auld Lang Syne, what the hell's all that about? All this big hoo-haa for...!

A clock changing.

If you want to trace the roots of this idea, then look no further than the 1971 Pertwee classic, The Daemons. Both stories feature a church that houses a malevolent being hell-bent on causing destruction.
