He reads articles on the subject and also enrolls in Madam Bluejay's Flying School, all of which leads to failure. He pays an eagle to give him flying lessons but the eagle drops him in the ocean and kills him. But Herman goes to Turtle Heaven where he is given a pair of wings and flies to his content. The "Be careful what you wish for" moral goes unstated.

He decides he'd be better off living in the "wide open spaces" anyway and makes himself a home out west... on top of an Indian's tepee. The Indian is not pleased with the intrusive woodpecker and tries to remove him from his premises... with little luck. Finally, the Indian slingshots the redhead back to where he came from, only to discover his TV set is left behind and is now playing "The Woody Woodpecker Show"!

Woody reads in his newspaper that quail hunting season begins the next morning at 5 a.m. Not wanting to pass up quail hunting, he determines to get a good night's sleep but, of course, his attempts are ruined by all manner of distractions such as a flashing neon sign, an obnoxious cuckoo clock (the cuckoo itself is just as obnoxious), and the destruction of Woody's bed causing him to sleep on an "automatic table" which he has many a tussle with.

Woody and Wally share an apartment building. Woody's favorite pastime is playing golf... it's just a shame he plays inside the house instead of outside. Finally, Wally breaks his club and tells him not to make any more noise. Woody decides to forget his troubles by taking a bath. His bathtub is coin-operated and when he inserts a dime for the water, it falls down the drain. Woody is not about to part with any money and is determined to retreive his dime... even if it means driving Wally to the nut house in the process!

Smedley is the manager of Balancing Rock Canyon where various boulders are perched atop high poles. As Smedley explains, the slightest noise is enough to send the rocks tumbling ("You gotta be quieter than a goldfish in a sound-proof aquarium") so it's hardly a surprise that he panics when Chilly Willy arrives selling various loud noisemakers among them firecrackers, a "boomerang brick", a joy buzzer, novelty gun, and exploding telephone. Eventually, the rocks fall landing Smedley in the hospital where Chilly arrives to sell one last noisemaker to "cheer him up" with.

The series was about Charlie Beary, the incompetent family man, his nagging wife Bessie, their well-meaning but half-witted teenage son Junior and their younger daughter Suzy, who later got a pet goose who never gets along with Charlie.
