This one is not completely historically accurate, but the historical background is real. It does show two battles that really did happen (Battle of the Alamo, and the battle by the river is presumably the Battle of Concepción, although numbers given are exaggerated).
Most of the characters in the movie were people who really did exist: Santa Ana, Travis, Crockett, Bowie, Houston, etc., although the relationships shown in the movie were mostly fictional. Bowie did fight American Indians for the Mexican army several years before the events in the movie, but he was probably never a close friend of Santa Ana at any time.
Some of the earlier parts of the movie seemed a bit tedious. However, the last 20 minutes of the movie (Battle of the Alamo and aftermath) was excellent.
Sterling Hayden who was usually a very good actor, seemed unenthusiastic at times, especially during the first half. However, other cast members were very good, especially the beautiful Anna Maria Alberghetti. Arthur Hunnicutt performed well as Davy Crockett, despite some of his lines being a bit over-the-top and not well-written.
Overall, not a bad movie despite the low budget.
