Although I stay outside West Bengal , I have keenly watched the evolution of the prevalent genre of Bengali movies... some of them have been extremely mature and bold while the rest have been extremely poor... I have watched the other movie and web series of Eken Babu earlier and found it amusing , unorthodox but lacking the so called finesse to bring the audience to theatres in droves... Hence this time , I didn't have much expectation and just booked tickets to celebrate the Bengali New Year... But the movie pleasantly surprised us ... this is one of the finest Bengali adventure movie made during recent times ... it was funny but immensely enjoyable .. lot of twists and turns which couldn't be predicted... the direction is good , editing is amazing but the dialogues and cinematography are simply world class ... the camera told a beautiful story and the location and occasional quips from the detective were a wonderful tribute to the maestro Satyajit Ray's Sonar Kella... overall a must watch for all , especially for kids and teenagers ... a clean and enjoyable movie where the intermission elicited a gasp from the audience due to the flow getting interrupted ... I haven't seen such a response for a long time ...
Watched Dwitiya Purush yesterday evening with family since this was U/A rated by Censor Board. Certain realisations and comments :
1. If you have an actor in a movie who is of the ruling political dispensation , it seems you can get a U/A rating irrespective of the contents of the movie. This movie has explicit scenes of violence , unbelievable amount of profanity, sex related expletives, homosexuality etc. If you are thinking of taking your teenager to the movie , think again and again .....
2. I am a fan of Quentin Tarantino movies and am used to sex , violence , expletive laden content which blend into the storyline. I am also a fan of Srijit but found the entire story extremely weak and falling apart and is virtually out of logic in some places. Against such a background , the explicit scenes and profanities seem to have been given to keep the audience interested. Tarantino once said " Violence is so good ...It affects audiences in a big way" . He also is a master of non linear approach to storytelling... I guess Srijit tried hard to be the Bengali Tarantino but without a plausible storyline failed miserably...
3. Introducing a particular genre is one of the hallmarks of great Directors... Srijit definitely introduced a new genre through "Baishe Srabon " ... It hit the audiences very hard through its dark content and unique storyline...Climax was poorly woven but people accepted it because of the surprise element. In this movie Srijit tries to replicate the same but the audience was already expecting a twist and wanted a well woven one... I'm sorry to say one of my favourite Directors failed badly.. The reviews in newspapers seem to be completely oblivious to the apparent failure...
Regarding the cast , they didn't have much to do... Am waiting for Srijit's next...
