Just saw this 2012 flick for the first time (2025 now). I've been aware for so many years now that having Jake Gyllenhaal in a lead role is kind of a guarantee for getting to see a good movie - as long as I can remember - but good heavens... This was a class movie from start to finish! Not only does it portray the dangers of being a policeman in the most dangerous LA suburbs and criminal ghettos in the most raw way possible, but also did they do a fine job by including found footage. I feel like this movie is up there among both the best police as best found footage flicks! Last but not least, it got a satisfying ending (that I personally could see coming) that leaves quite a mark. Wow!
Don't know what to make of this movie.
It started off OK and kinda engaging, but little by little the story splits up in more and more and more subplots, which in the end are brought back together in 1 main plot... Which doesn't appear to be 1 main plot after all, but several subplots AGAIN. It's just all over the place.
It's like the writer of the story was desperate to make this one stand out in twists, not realizing it's hard to do with so many characters. Because eventually, I couldn't care less about any of them and I wasn't willing enough to bother understanding the plot no more.
Just wondering how they ever managed to pitch this, because it honestly feels impossible to summarize it even to movie fans who like discussing this type or genre.
Avoid!

Wow... After seeing the trailer first, I was expecting a lot of this film. And I sure wasn't disappointed after seeing it.
I have to say, I've seen quite the Belgian blockbusters and hidden gems, as I collect them (as they are hard to find sometimes), but this one is up there among the best for me.
Non-stop brutal action scenes will come your way, well acted and super engaging from the start.
A simple yet clever story that delivers in a very realistic way, without trying to be anything else.
Apart from... - maybe - the very end.
The ending felt somewhat anticlimactic, given the progression of the story, and they did put in a tiny little political stance. However, it didn't make the main story fall short in any way, but I wasn't sure what to think of the ending as it was.
Overall, a solid 9/10.
