I haven't read the book, since romance novels are not my thing at all. I do however, once in a while ,watch a romance or a rom/com flick.
I avoid most Hallmark and Netflix romances, because the main criteria for the actors, seems to be that they are good looking. I'm sure that somewhere in Hollywood, there's a warehouse, filled to the brim with mediocre, good looking actors, who's let out once in a while, (mostly around christmas), to lend their looks to some "they get each other in the end", movie.
But sometimes we get a movie, where they actually hired some people who can act.
Diane Lane, (ok, she's hot, but still....), looks like a mature woman, not totally covered in make up. Well, she looks real ! One scene where she's crying, with swollen eyes, red nose and freckles, is a nice touch.
The plot also differs from the usual formula that can be applied to about 90% of rom/coms : Two people meet, but don't really like each other. Then after a while they start liking each other, and fall in love. Of course, about 25 minutes before it ends, something happens that seem to ruin it all, and the rest of the time goes with working to make it happen anyway, and then they kiss.
Ok, guess I got sidetracked here ;) My point is that i actually liked this movie because the events had a few twists along the way. And while we do get a happy ending, it's not your typical one. The characters were believable, and the scenery added the right romantic backdrop. Like all romantic movies it is of course just a little too glossy to be realistic, but they don't overdo it here, and it's clearly above average for this genre.

It's probably just me, or the fact that I never really thought that Steve Martin was funny. Same goes for Martin Short. But the show kept coming up in suggestions, so I decided to give it a shot. 1st season wasn't all bad and since it ended with a cliffhanger, I continued with season 2. From the other reviews it seems that those 2 seasons are the best, but when I finish this 2nd season, that's it for me.
It doesn't really work for me, either as a comedy or a "whodunnit". I can see where it's supposed to be funny, but I haven't laughed even once, and as for who's the killer, I lost interest a while ago. There's no real tension building up, only two aged comedians fooling around. Anyway, I'm 2 episodes away from ending season 2, so I'm gonna stick around to the ending. I'll rate it 6, since it's not really bad, but how it got an average 8+ rating is a bigger mystery to me, than who killed who and why.
