1. LA Police has no jurisdiction globally.
2. "Lady boy"? Really? The US has more lady boys than elsewhere. This stereotype proliferated by ignorant travelers who don't know what real women look like has to go.
Other than that, this movie has some sci-fi and Hollywood cliches--beautiful women surviving, guy with chip on his shoulder redeems himself, dude with police/military training single-handedly kills aliens. It always amazes me how these kinds of characters seem to have unlimited bullets, unlimited energy, and a very sticky and strong grip that allows them to jump and hold on to ledges without slipping and falling to their deaths.

I rather enjoyed this one. It is a cliche teen flick, with the first-person narrative sounding a lot like Warm Bodies or other similar awkward-teen consciousness POV set in New Orleans, only with POC main characters and one white girl. It works. I think it's still better than Twilight in terms of acting/execution. Twilight is the lowest bar for me.
I was a fan of Anne Rice in the early 2000s vampire craze, so I like that they did not really change the lore into something stupid like being unable to go under the sun because their skin glimmers like diamonds.
I also like light historical fiction situation. I love historical fiction even when it's not complex or nuanced.

Way back when this was popular, I attempted to read the book. Worst book I've read with disjointed writing and an annoying female protagonist. I didn't watch the movie because why would I watch a movie of a book I hate. But I watched it, finally.
And I don't know why, but I found Dakota Johnson precious. And Jamie Dornan, having watched him in The Fall where he was a terrific actor, did really well in this considering the nature of the show and the corny, simplistic script.
Lots of naked scenes that I did not anticipate because I could not finish writing the book. But hey, it's Jamie Dornan.
