The concept of having the viewer locked into on location and seeing the different stories that played out there throughout time is such an interesting concept to me and if it was taken in a more abstract or loose way, it could have been great.
Instead, we were given pieces of other stories from that location/house and spent the majority of the time with Tom Hanks' family that had not much interesting going on. What really annoyed me was the fact that about half way through the movie, it drops most of the other storylines going on and only brings them up for the simplest connections to the main family. To top it off, the dialogue was terrible in my opinion.
Also, two characters that are in the middle of the pandemic in 2020 discuss that the housing market is good and that may be the least believable piece of dialogue I have heard in a movie.

The first thing that stood out to me is how beautifully this movie is shot and has some amazing freeze frames that should be framed on a wall. Having the lead woman have so much control not only when she receives the spider tattoo, but also in her own relationship before it was a surprising thing to see in a movie from the 60s. There is an interesting mystery of how much the spider tattoo is influencing her or if a large part of her actions are a understanding result of her being kidnapped and sold. This movie could have easily gone down the exploitation route, but it clearly had more to say and took itself way more seriously. I am very thankful for that.
A very sobering example of how behind Japanese law and society as whole is when it comes to sexual assault and harassment.
It makes absolutely no sense for there to be video evidence with multiple camera angles of someone being pulled half-conscious into a hotel with multiple witnesses saying she was trying to leave where it is later reported as a sexual assault and claim there is not enough evidence to even investigate it. It was an incredibly intelligent move to document the whole process of pursing justice as many who are not aware of how negatively victims are looked at in Japan would not believe it if you told them.
