Hate the minimum character requirement.
The production value is pretty good for what i imagine the budget is. Like the lighting, cinematography, locations are all pretty good.
The acting. What you'd expect from a group of regional C listers who probably were about as serious about this project as anyone involved. Accents were all over. George double-ya Bush commander is the most hilarious character. He single handedly brought the whole cast down. Although the lead was also obnoxiously over manicured and clearly cast for appearances. She looks like a cosplayer the entire film.
D- for the HMU and wardrobe on her.
But I'll still probably pin that on the director.
The only way a film like this gets forceably penetrated through production against everyone's better judgement, is a thick headed director who just needs everyone to "Trust his vision" and won't hear out a single objection.
Lot of ways this could have been a much better film with what they already had.
Good job from individuals.
Shame on whoever the tyrant was who wouldn't use a wise council to guide this to greater reception.
Still entertaining.

Academically in your subjective view it violates your formula.
But this film has withstood the test of time to be my all time favorite film for the past 23 years.
To me, it's perfect. The location, the atmosphere, the acting, the build, the nostalgic feels from when the x-files was on cable, withholding "them" visually til the end so your imagination does the work it did like when you were a child still afraid of the dark. James Newton Howard transcends in hands of fate part 1 and 2. The set dec. The side characters. 13! My brother and I still quote that Shasta commercial and that book store guy to this day.
Like any story, there's multiple ways you could have taken. There's a couple things that could have been flushed out a bit more. I still don't know the last the Shamalan says to Gibson before he tells him to not open the pantry. I've seen it probably 30 plus times and I honestly think he said his line wrong and they left it in the edit. Bit man, to heck with the nit pickers. They made this film in like 2 weeks and it's as close to perfect as anyone besides the Cohen brothers can get.
Just because Blake Snyder can't picture a world with theology AND aliens... that's like pre 1500s catholics being unable to believe in God if Native Americans exist. Like... what does that have to do with it just because you don't believe in either and the theological wrestling match went over your head.
Anything that doesn't fit nicely in their little box of reality usually does. Shots fired.

Signs is great. Unless you're Blake Snyder, and wrong.
