I was bored and looking for something to watch, and while it isn't anything Oscar worthy, it's still pretty campy and entertaining for what it is.
As someone who grew up in the 90s, it felt very nostalgic. The character Mr. Crocket and his show, Mr. Crocket's World, at face value was reminiscent of old kids shows I used to watch, like Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood or Barney. However, this movie is not for kids.
You quickly learn that he might look child-friendly, but he's quite the opposite. Mr. Crocket's character reminds me of a mix between Freddy Kruger and Bughuul from Sinister. He's someone who was once alive, who was "wronged" in life, and has returned from the dead as a supernatural being. He makes his rounds stealing kids from parents who he deems as unfit (of course, they're punished for it), until he eventually crosses the wrong mother.
The whole movie felt very familiar, yet still fresh. It takes children's TV shows to a whole new darker level. The film has plenty of gore, and the use of mostly practical FX over CGI only adds to the nostalgia.
Some of the writing for the scenes without the antagonist left much to be desired, but the film is very straightforward, and the actor who plays Mr. Crocket did a phenomenal job with his role (thankfully, you see a lot of him too). The lead actress playing the mother, and the child playing her son both did a good job too.
Could there be a sequel? Maybe, probably not, but it certainly has potential, and personally, I wouldn't mind seeing more of Mr. Crocket. If you're looking for something new, it's worth watching at least once.

Having just found out this remake was even being made, right before it dropped was a very nice surprise!
I was reading some of these other reviews, and the biggest complaint I saw was that there was no character development for Barlow or his handler, Mr. Straker. I understand this is Stephen King and his books are quite lengthy. However, even though I wouldn't have minded more character development, I honestly don't think it needed it.
The problem when making/remaking a movie based on a super long book is the fact that there's too much material to cover, a lot of which will have to be cut out (unless you want sequels). The movie's still two hours long, and it kept me engaged the entire time.
I believe some people expect too much out of films (especially horror), and sometimes, you just want to be entertained. For me, this movie did just that. A perfect movie to kick off the spooky season!

If you like Christmas horror films, this is worth watching at least once.
I don't think this is as bad as everyone else on here is making it out to be, but I'll admit, it could have been so much better.
John McHale and Justin Long were great to see. I'm surprised they agreed to do this movie, but if I'm being honest, it's probably why I decided to watch it.
While I appreciate horror films with humor, I feel like this movie was fighting itself on whether it's supposed to be horror or horror/comedy, which I'm sure is why it's getting hate.
If you're looking for a holiday movie, or just something new to watch, you should give it a shot.
