Sometimes I like to watch older movies that got a certain success in their time, just to see what people liked in those days, if it's deserved or not, or if it aged well or not. Sleuth was nominated for four Oscars, needless to say it wouldn't get nominated for any Oscars if it was made now. In my opinion it didn't age very well, it looks too fake, with a story that is not that interesting either. Still, it was better than the 2007 remake, also with Michael Caine. In the original version it's all about Laurence Olivier and Michael Caine, as the entire movie is just an endless conversation between the two main characters, a stand-off between a rich eccentric guy and the lover of his wife. It's watchable but I'm still wondering why it would get four Oscar nominations?
Although they made a series afterwards I watched it before watching the movie. A lot of scenes from this movie served as inspiration for some episodes and to be honest they were all better. Jemaine Clement was involved in the series and even if he didn't acted in those episodes all credits go to him. I follow him since the excellent comedy series Flight Of The Concords and been a fan since. The movie isn't bad though, on the contrary it's funny, but the show that aired from 2019 to 2024 is just excellent whilst this movie is just good. Good acting from the entire cast but again the characters from the series were just phenomenal whilst here just good.
Maria Full Of Grace is a good Columbian drama, about a drug mule desperate to make some easy money to support her family. It makes you think about the risks some people are willing to take to earn some bucks. From swallowing pellets to passing the border checks to meeting the criminals, there are just a lot of dangerous obstacles to pass that are just not worth the risks for just money. It's a daily problem that can't be solved unless you make all drugs legal and so ruin the cartels businesses that thrive on illegality and so the high prices that make them rich. Good acting from the entire cast, a story that looked real.
After thirty years I decide to watch 12 Monkeys again, to see if it aged well. At the time it was a movie I enjoyed a lot and now thirty years later I can say I still enjoyed watching it. Terry Gilliam has a vivid fantasy, he made some great movies and this one is one of them. His Monty Python period is over and since then he directed some very good movies. In 12 Monkeys it's all about Madeleine Stowe, Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt, the three main actors that made this sci-fi entertaining. Good acting from all of them. It's for sure not an easy story, you have to stay focussed all the time if you don't want to lose the plot. But since I remembered a lot of this movie it became much clearer than the first time I watched it. Later they made a series about it but the movie is in my opinion better. You could say 12 Monkeys has its place in the classics of this genre.
I never heard of Hunt For The Wilderpeople before. I stumbled on it whilst browsing in a list with one hundred movies worth watching. It's definitely a movie worth watching, certainly if you like an adventurous drama with mild humour and good nature scenes. The beautiful landscapes, a touching and heartwarming story, and good acting are the main ingredients of this movie. Sam Neill plays the older lonely guy and he is accompanied by Julian Dennison, the young small delinquent with a wild fantasy and everything to learn. Together they go on a journey through the bush whilst being chased by the authorities. It's all good entertainment and well made.
Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly together in a movie is something to look forward to. Step Brothers is another movie with both of them, which I found a bit better than Talladega Nights: The Ballad Of Ricky Bobby. But this one is also a good comedy, well at least for people like me that have no problem with mocking Southern hillbillies. Not sure if the true Rednecks will have the same sense of humour or even understand that kind of humour. In this movie it's all about the clichés of that certain part of America. So yes you could call the characters pretty dumb but that's what made it funny. Making fun of people with a lower IQ in this case is just funny, maybe wrong to others, but funny to me. Who in his right mind would pay hundreds of dollars to watch cars driving in circles the entire day? You need some 'special' people for that. Personally I hate that sport, if you can call that a sport, but watching making fun of them is just priceless. Add to that that I have a soft spot for Will Ferrell whose movies I always find funny and you get a good movie night.
Guillermo del Toro, a writer/director that I really like, has a vivid imagination, creating the most bizarre and weird creatures. Pan's Labyrinth is to me his best work thus far. I loved a lot of his other movies but Pan's Labyrinth just stands out from the rest, it's definitely on another level. The cinematography is like it always is with him, excellent, extraordinary and visually different. The acting in Pan's Labyrinth is also excellent, from the kid to the fascist to the fawn, they all were very convincing. It's one of those movies you remember and that you will want to watch again some day. In my case it was the second viewing and I will probably watch it again in the future.
I remember watching The Fly when I was young, another movie from David Cronenberg, and that one I really liked, even made me think David Cronenberg was a director I should follow, just to see with what other movies he would be involved with. After so many years I can only come to the conclusion he's a highly overrated director. I watched a lot of his creations, every time hoping for something as good as The Fly, but every time it has been a disappointment. The Shrouds is yet another boring movie, much too long, uninteresting and with an even more deceiving ending. It's only watchable because of the actors. I guess I will never become a fan of Cronenberg. I think I just going to give up on him. This was my last movie from him, he's just too boring.
After more than thirty years I decided to watch this classic again. Needless to say it aged well as it's still one of the best in this genre, the serial killer hunt/investigation. In this genre Se7en, The Silence Of The Lambs, and Prisoners remain the best to me. Of course I rated this one as I would have scored it the first time, that was when you had no clue of what was coming and you didn't know what was in the box. "What's in the box?" is still a classic phrase my wife and I still use thirty years later, so you could say the final scene marked every single one of us. So even when you know the outcome, which is almost impossible to forget, it still remains a great movie. Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt were just amazing in this movie. I almost envy people that never watched this gem as I can only imagine the cinematic experience they will feel at the end. Great movie!
Flight Risk is a well made action/thriller with a very small cast. Michelle Dockery, Mark Wahlberg and Topher Grace are basically the only actors that matter in this movie. The fact that almost the entire movie is filmed in a little airplane could discourage people to watch it but it was actually never boring at all. There was a good amount of suspense and plenty of action to keep the audience interested. Topher Grace, I still have difficulties to see him in something else than That Seventies Show, was also convincing in this different role. Good acting from this small cast. All in all not a bad movie in this genre, it deserves a higher rating.
I did enjoy watching Would You Rather and so did my wife. The horror parts were not too visual, just the idea of the damage the sadistic tasks could do were already enough to make it a horror movie. Immediately you start taking sides with some characters and hope others will get their comeuppance. Not sure if everybody will like the outcome but to me it worked. The acting wasn't bad at all. The cinematography was quite simple as almost the entire movie was shot at one location. The story is what it is, maybe a bit simple and pointless but it was entertaining and that's all I want when watching a horror movie.
I know it's called 11.22.63 but to me and 95% of the rest of the world it's called 22.11.63 as that's the correct way to write a date. Only Americans are so stubborn to change it, just like they don't use the super simple metric system like any normal person would do. That said this mini-series is a good watch. You get immediately sucked into the story so you want to binge watch it, which is possible as it's just one season. James Franco is on a mission and together with the beautiful Sarah Gadon they try to stop the assassination of JFK. It's all well done, easy to follow, good acting and cinematography, so certainly deserving its high ratings.
American Star is worth a watch but that's about it. It's one of those movies you watch and then forget everything about it within a week. The pace is just much too slow, almost annoyingly slow. It's like they wanted to build the tension up to a climax but the climax was rather weak and so there was nothing special about this movie. I basically watched it for Ian McShane, an actor I enjoy watching. The actors were certainly not bad but they couldn't make this story better. Also filming in Fuenteventura, the most boring island from the Canary Islands wasn't great either, unless you like to see sand and desert all the time. A rather disappointing movie.
A lot has been written about Skinwalker Ranch, a lot of documentaries have been made, all that peaked my interest as I have a soft spot for this kind of stories, whether it be about aliens or paranormal activities, so I was interested in this movie just to see what they would come up with. The problem I have with it is that it is a found footage movie, something that I find incredibly annoying to watch. I will never get why you would prefer to make a movie with a shaky handycam than with professional material. It just doesn't work for me. Add to that that the actors mostly are like the camerawork, cheap and amateurish. I was just hoping for something better. Watching another documentary about it would probably have been better.
Violence and gore: severe. That's what the warning says here on IMDb and that was completely right. There are some scenes that might shock the audience, mostly because they look real and hurtful. So credits for the makers of those bloody scenes, that's what made this horror movie stand out from the rest. The story itself was also pleasant to follow. Well pleasant might be the wrong word as the story is quite disturbing, but the story is good for a horror movie. Sally Hawkins plays the character everybody will hate, unless there's something wrong with you, and she did a good job, as well as the rest of the cast. A more than decent horror movie, that's been awhile...
See For Me is also categorized as a horror movie but if it is that you're looking for it just isn't. It's just a thriller, but a good one, and that's mostly because the major character is blind which brings tension to the story. Maybe because you start thinking how life would be if you were blind, not easy to say the least. Skyler Davenport plays Sophie, the blind girl catsitting a secluded house in the middle of nowhere. A home invasion is the start of the suspenseful plot. Good acting from the entire small cast. The cinematography was good as well. They did a good job making it suspenseful. I thought it was entertaining from start till finish.
I have difficulties to see Kevin James in anything else than The King Of Queens, so seeing him play the skilled fighter/killer is something I had to adapt to. Guns Up is supposed to be an action comedy but in my opinion it would have worked better just as an action movie. The comedy was not necessary, and not that good to be honest. When people start to have deep conversations in the middle of a life-threatening situation where bullets fly around your head I do feel annoyed, certainly when the conversations are cheesy. The acting wasn't bad, nor was the action although a bit exaggerated at times, but the movie is just good enough to watch once and then forget about it.
Cascade is watchable but is it a great movie? No, not particularly. For that the plot is just a bit too simple, with a lot of bad decision making as well from the villains as the victims. I call it lazy script writing. Sure it has some entertainment value but it could all have been much better. As for the acting I guess it was okay although some were just average at best. They for sure looked for some actors that could play a redneck hillbilly, I guess the physique was more important than the acting skills. All in all it's a movie okay to watch once but in this genre there have been much better movies made.
First of all let me say I'm a fan of Marvel and DC Comics movies so I was curious about this new Marvel movie, certainly considering the high ratings it got on here. But in the end I was a bit disappointed. It was just not the best story in my opinion, also they tried too much to be as funny as Deadpool but they for sure didn't reach that level of humour. The acting wasn't bad though, the dialogues were just not that great. Nothing wrong with the special effects and action scenes. For sure over the top but then again that's always the case with these movies. How much more Marvel superheroes do we need to see? I think they should stick with the ones they already have and stop creating new ones all the time. It's watchable though, it's just not the best Marvel movie.
Oddity is worth a watch but I wouldn't watch it a second time in the future. For that it's just not good enough. The horror consists of a couple jump scares, some creepy masks and some shots of a wooden man. Those are enough to scare my wife but have not much effect on me. But seeing my wife freaking out is always a bonus as I find that also entertaining. The story isn't bad, pleasant and easy to follow. Decent acting from the entire cast and decent cinematography as well. Oddity is just the kind of movie I enjoyed watching but that I will also have forgotten everything about it in just one week.
This was my second Wes Anderson movie this week. First I watched Asteroid City (2023) which I slightly preferred. I scored that one an eight. The Phoenician Scheme is yet another typical Wes Anderson movie so if you don't like his style just don't bother watching it as you will be disappointed. But if you do like his style, like I do, give it a shot and enjoy his stunning style of cinematography. Everything is again very structured and symmetrical, nothing is out of place, everything positioned in the right place at the right angle. That's what makes his style different and enjoyable to the eye. Everything is very well thought of, the story almost doesn't matter. And what about the cast? All world class actors that clearly enjoy to feature in one of his new creations. You got to give it to him, Wes is special and once you're a fan you remain a fan.
On another platform I was looking for a comedy/thriller and that's what this movie was categorized as. Well it's not a comedy so I was disappointed. But on here it was categorized as a thriller, which again turned out to be wrong, so disappointment again. It's just a drama, and not even a good one. It's just too long before anything interesting happens and then it's just the end, which was too abrupt and again disappointing. The acting was okay so no real complaints about that but with decent actors alone you can't guarantee the movie will be good. For that you need an interesting story and this one was just not one of those.
I didn't have too high expectations before watching Deep Cover but it turned out to be much better than I was hoping for. As an action comedy it works perfectly well. No weak moments, a lot of action and some silly humour are the main ingredients for this entertaining movie. Bryce Dallas Howard, Orlando Bloom and Nick Mohammed played the three improv comedians that get involved against their will in a large gangster operation and that results in some good funny scenes. Orlando Bloom played my favourite character but the other two were good as well. The acting was good and that from the entire cast. I can't see this movie displeasing a lot of people unless you don't have a good sense of humour.
Good American Family is a gripping story based on true events. I like to watch stories based on true events but this one made me so mad I have difficulties to remain calm when writing this review. I can only come to the conclusion we live in an abominable world with seriously evil people and that in all sides of society. What made me being disgusted the most is the whole judicial system, especially in America where the rich get away with anything. The judge should be ashamed of himself and so should be every single jury member that participated in this farce of a trial. The real evil on earth is Kristine Barnett played very well by Ellen Pompeo. Barnett is a subhuman, the kind that deserves to rot in hell, even though I don't believe in hell or heaven, but now I wished there was a hell so she could get a front row seat there. Mark Duplass plays her husband Michael Barnett, the typical doormat without a backbone. Well played by him as well, made me hate him for almost the entire show. Credits to the actress that played Natalia Grace, who gave me mixed emotions all the way. The story is the kind that once you start watching you get so sucked into it that you have to know the outcome. It starts slow but soon you want justice, you start hating almost everybody in this show, certainly when you read the true story of every single character after the show, which turned out to be all subhumans not deserving to breathe the same air as you and me. I was going to give it an eight stars rating, then changed it to a six because I was so disgusted, but decided on a seven as there was some kind of satisfaction in the end, but if it's justice you looking for I wouldn't watch it. What a sick world we live in.
Before reviewing this movie I just need to say something about another reviewer, curtispeace, that scored this movie with a two after only watching a couple of minutes of this movie. How can anybody take you seriously? Rating a movie you didn't event watch, why would you waste your time and most importantly our time at writing a review that will take you longer than the time you actually spent on watching the movie? It's beyond ridiculous. I will never understand why negative people have to bash something just to get attention. That said I watched the movie until the end, like I do with all the movies by the way, bad or good. The cinematography was the best thing about Sew Torn, interesting shots for the entire movie. The acting wasn't bad either. The story on the other hand has to be taken not too seriously as every scenario, there are like three, is too ridiculous for words. But it's watchable because of all the other positive things mentioned before.
