Watching this documentary series the viewer might think gay men were a tiny minority who did nothing for the gay rights movement, and trans people formed the majority. What a slap in the face to all the gay men who risked everything at a time when they could have been arrested and lost their careers for just being gay, or worse, beaten up or killed. What was interesting was that in spite of being heavy on exaggerating the importance of trans women of colour in the history of gay rights, the inclusion of archival footage made it clear that the narrative was pure fiction because all the footage clearly showed that it was mainly gay, lesbian and bi people who did the heavy lifting.
It's a sad reflection on society that most reviewers like this show. I didn't expect historical accuracy from a satire but I did expect it to be funny (eg in the manner of Blackadder). It wasn't. In fact, the script might as well have been written by adolescent school boys who have just discovered swearing and don't need anything more than the F or C bombs, or allusions to sex, to make them roll around on the floor with laughter.
The cinematography and music were excellent, as were some of the performances, but in the end, this film was clinical, hollow and peppered with unnecessary scenes that contributed nothing to the overall story.
I won't go into the plot but the way the script was written, I didn't feel anything for any of the characters and there were so many holes in the story, I had to read about the real life people and events to make sense of it, so I did learn something about this era in history, but not from the movie itself.
