Conceptually, I really like it. It's a nice addition to the franchise. It has all the hallmarks of previous additions into the universe while adding some nice depth, perspective, and variety into a few more heavily used ideas. The overall tone and tenor of the show has been nice, dark, but not without its light hearted moments to break it up.
The source of my inner turmoil stems from two main factors. One is the way it's filmed. There are these random, super spazzy flash forward or flash backward moments spliced into the film that are intended (I'm assuming) to help the audience understand what is inevitably going to happen. Unfortunately they just come across as both cheap jump scare moments and heavy handed foreshadowing. It's lazy filmmaking. It makes me feel like the shows creators think we (the audience) are all idiots who require such heavy handed tactics. Stop patronizing us and just make the dang show!! Anyway, I find its use taxing to say the least.
The second point that I am really frustrated with are the use of practical effects/ xenomorph suit. I love practical effects!! Few things make me more happy than when practical effects are used instead of CGI vomit. But the problem here is that the practical effects .. kinda suck.. or at least the shows creators don't know how to effectively use them. There are many good examples, from this very franchise, where practical effects have trumped CGI (most recently Alien Romulus). But, the effects here are so bad, it's distracting. It really pains me to say it, because it could've been so awesome.. but instead it just feels like you are watching some drunkard wobbling around in a cheap costume from Spirit Halloween. Just makes me sad.
Anyway, so far I would give it a solid 7/10.. but I'm just kinda disappointed it what I'm seeing.
