Often watched this classic film; just finished rewatching and realised just how much I had been taking it for granted.
This is set during World War II, more specifically, the North African desert campaign. The film is not however, an all guns blazing war film, it is more like a road trip, with struggles which bond together an unlikely group of fellow travellers.
The ambulance, Katy, is a character on its own; you will her to make another and another and yet another miraculous recovery.
The human characters are also worthy, and you so want them to make it to that ice cold Carlsberg lager in Alexandria.
One's stomach is often tied in knots as they meet each trial and tribulation.
Now this is someone who has seen this film many, many times over the years and it still manages to evoke all these emotions and reactions.
Rousing stuff; you feel like you are on that dry, dusty, danger ridden journey with the flawed but plucky group.

Just watched this, but apart from the good looking leads, there was little else.
Creepy 14 year old grooming vibes, very strange, even for the times this was set in. Lonely girl, lonely woman, but the whole narrative did not seem to go anywhere.
Learnt no more from this film than anything I had read over the years. We do not get any real sense of Priscilla's experience, other than teenage love angst, ensuing loneliness and occasionally fear.
Bewildered, by the purpose of this film.
I was somewhat bored, but credit does go to the lead actors, although it seems that they had very little to work with.

Watched through the eyes of an unhappy young boy, Sam.
Sam remains apart from the seemingly idyllic setting of a family celebration; all sunshine, overlapping enthusiastic conversations, al fresco lunch and general all-round cheerfulness, with the odd humourous jibe thrown in.
Sam is there with his larger-than-life dad, who seems to try to hog the limelight, a trait that his family know and love, and his softly spoken unassuming, sweet mum.
As the film plays out the underlying tensions in Sam's world with his mum and dad are hinted at with a dramatic and no holds barred revelation from Sam himself, which leaves everyone speechless.
This is haunting and thought provoking; you learn enough about the larger and central family in its short 17 minute run time to make the issues being dealt with impactful.
Highly recommend.
