Probably my favourite film of all time. The thing about First Contact is that it's not just about Star Trek. If you don't like Star Trek but can live through the first 20 minutes you'll find a gem of a movie which is as much about the future of humanity & an invention so wonderful as it is about Yet More Star Trek Plot.
Warp Speed - they've been saying that since Captain Kirk. But how did it happen? and why might it all not happen, our future could be in ruins and one flight of one makeshift spacecraft some time after world war III will make all the difference.
The on-screen relationship between Picard & Lily is totally magic, as is the relationship between the Enterprise crew members - you get a sense of team, of family.
First Contact is one film I enjoy watching again & again. The flight of the Phoenix is one scene I totally love, along with the end scenes.
The only sad thing about the movie is that you come away and deep down you know there is no Cochrain, no FTL engine around the corner. Well, not yet!

Imagine in the 80's as a kid, and you're in front of your household's first VHS video recorder.
The tapes appear so big as to be huge. You load them in the VCR with both hands, and press down hard on the electro-mechanical "play" key. Eventually one of the best films of all time, Convoy, appears.. "arizona, noon, on the 7th of june.."
When my brother and I first watched Convoy we were kids, my father had recorded it from broadcast television on our first VCR. It seems that Convoy was very popular in the 80's, especially for kids, both in the UK and Europe.
Basically you have the Rubber Duck leading a huge convoy of truckers protesting against the way they've been treated by one Dirty Lyle (and some police in general) while out on the road. The movie is fun.. chases, trucks, you name it but the movie also has a more serious undertones - you can watch it on at least two levels.
Based on a country & western song, I think the makers of the film did very well to bring it as they did to the screen. Imagine my delight at finding on DVD here in the UK. It still holds up as one of my most loved films ever, despite having mono sound and a less-than-awesome picture quality - it goes to show that content is still the most important aspect of any movie.
So anyway.. go find and watch Convoy. A wonderful film which lasts the test of time.
