This show was missing Lamont for one very simple reason. Note that even on this site, there is no reference to the "made for TV" show this actor did, in which he plays a gay man. The movie sucked to be honest, but it was an attempt, way ahead of it's time, to show that there are more gay people among us than, at the time, we wanted to believe. It was effective, but the show just sucked. But, at a young age I learned 1 out of3 men has had an "alternative experience". So while the rest of the world might want to forget it, I never did. I always look at that 3rd person with suspicion now! LOL, that's a joke, calm down! Anyway, after doing this made for TV movie, the attempt to make a comeback of the Sanford and Son show with Lamont was not possible. He was now a labeled man. It was NOT OK for a man in Hollywood to play a gay guy yet. So His career died on the vine and the attempt at a comeback for the show did too, because Lamont, as bland as the character may have seemed, was the perfect straight man to Redd Foxx.

Simple, sweet. Very few shows touched this genre without dealing (too deep) with the politics of the time, at the time this show existed, every other TV show was trying to make some huge one sided statement. You can't help but laugh. Clearly Redd Foxx was the beginning of the concept that led to "All in the Family". What makes this show special is that it is so easy to watch and just enjoy! Of course, the lettuce comment is, well, funny, unless your house smells like lettuce, then I guess to you, it's not funny, The stars that cameo'ed on the show were perfect! I have to give this show an excellent because TV has yet to reproduce a show that is simply fun, like this one. This is one of those shows that needs to be released on DVD as a collection. It needs to be available to all generations to enjoy a man who just had that special gift, to just kinda make us laugh, without even seeming to try.

I was but a young lad when this show premiered, but I must say I have never forgotten it. It was my first "favorite show" that I was not influenced by an outsider to like. Didn't I say I was young? I do wish someone would show reruns of this show or at least release it to DVD. It would bring back fond memories of an innocent time. If you've never seen this, your missing out. This was Jeff Goldblum and Ben Vereen at their best! It was funny, it had mystery, and it had originality! However, it didn't last long. Perhaps the people of that time didn't know how to appreciate a show about nothing that had everything, yet. I vote for reruns!
