I guess some people in the the gay community will be extatic about The Christmas Setup because the gay-themed movies are in short supply but on a closer look this movie is boring, is not memorable and loaded with cliches. Hugo is a stereotypical gay guy: he is oversensistive, he is flamboyant and, yes, he's got BFF. At Christmas he travels home taking his BFF along. In his native town he stumbles on his old schoolmate who just happens to be gay too. And actualy this is it. The whole story can be summarised in a couple of sentences but he movie takes 90 minutes to tell it to us. And yes! The movie is saccharine and sentimental to the extreme. What do you want? It is made-for-tv flick after all.
A piece of my heart (En del av mitt hjärta in Swedish) is a Swedish rom-com which looks like your typical Hallmark movie only somehow filmed in Swedish language. Businesswoman Isabella (beautiful, blonde) returns to her native town and runs into her ex-boyfriend Simon (handsome, blonde). Suddenly she realizes she's still in love with him. But Simon loves Molly (sharp, shoves the cake into Isabella's pretty face) and there's Edwin who loves Isabella.
Well...where to start? Some plot twists are really silly. The whole story involving Edwin and his unhealthy relationships with his mother is embarrassing and made me scream. Some actors are too old for their parts. Don't they have young actors in Sweden? Jonas Karlsson is 50 but he plays a 30-something guy. What on earth is it supposed to mean? At least some songs are good, the views of rural Sweden are great and costumes are lavish.
