Michael Mann was the executive producer on the seminal music infused stylised cop show Miami Vice. It very much pushed the boundaries of 80s television shows. It was dubbed MTV cops.
Mann never directed an episode of Miami Vice. In 2006, now a critically acclaimed film director. He made the film version and it was a total misfire.
Vice detective Sonny Crockett (Colin Farrell) and Ricardo Tubbs (Jamie Foxx) infiltrate a drug gang as the FBI have a mole.
It is fronted South American José Yero (John Ortiz) and Japanese-Cuban Isabella.
The real power behind them is wanted kingpin, Archangel de Jesús Montoya.
Crockett falls for Isabella which makes Yero jealous and he never trusted Crockett and Tubbs.
The storyline is ponderous and slow. Most of it makes little sense. There are several good action set pieces but that is expected of Mann.
At no time this felt like Miami Vice. Compare this to Tom Cruise's Mission Impossible franchise. That had the theme tune and a hero going on very difficult missions.

Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) is a former psychic and con man who stopped pretending to be one.
Now he works for the police as a consultant for his sharp observation skills.
Jane has been obsessed with catching the serial killer Red John. It is a personal thing as the serial killer targeted Jane's family.
After getting the murder of a teenage girl horribly wrong. He suspected her dad of being the killer and so did the mother of the girl and she shot the dad dead.
Jane is bought back on to the scene when a double murder is seen to be the handiwork of Red John.
Crime shows with profilers are nothing new. This one had a horrible opening. Jane is in the house alone of the parents of the murder victim, making a sandwich for himself, making a cup of tea. It was so odd.
The rest of it, with Jane wanting to solve the double murders. It did feel reminiscent of the movies Manhunter/Red Dragon. Especially how Will Graham caught Hannibal Lecter. In Manhunter, an important clue was the books in Dr Lecter's bookcase. It is kind of replicated here.
