I eagerly anticipated watching RPF just last week. It just happened to be one of those movies that slipped past me......I was sure I would see Kangeroos and Dingos...maybe not Koalas granted...but even Emus...and surely snakes of one sort or another....along with survival skills...but not a dicky bird....and not a straw going into the ground to suck up water ...witchety grubs being eaten alive.ZILCH. which only leads me to believe that the actual walk along the RPF may have been more leisurely than we imagine...along only inhabited regions, living off of hand-outs?? I also wish there had been more sights of maps and " we are here...they are there" explanations and mentions of actual miles/kms travelled and the logistics of it all better explained. Very disappointed!!!
The most poignant moment for me in this movie was the lynching of the young German in the forest. As per movie tradition we all expected warm fuzzy compassion from the mob, I mean he had a wife and kids, yet when they could find none in their hearts and executed justice, who of us could find fault with them? And the fact that not a word was spoken by their commander spoke volumes. THAT for me was a telling scene. In the light of the recent Scotland decision to show compassion for Al Megrahi and release him on "compassionate" grounds, maybe Mr Kenny Mcaskill should reflect on that scene and feel the pain of the mob. On a slightly negative note, there were too many sound clips of the word 'Gunther' being used whenever the Germans were around. It was irritating.
I saw this film last week for the first time. The acting was on a level above most films I have ever seen, in particular that of Johny Depp and Leonardo Di Caprio. These two actors have shot up in my estimation since my having seen this movie, not in the sense that I didn't appreciate their recent work. I realized what true artists with integrity to their craft they must surely be, having been able to press on with their careers notwithstanding the absence of academy recognition for their performances here. The scene of Arnie trying to wake his dead mother, the developing expressions on his face , his striking of himself on the head, the pitch of his shrieks of joy while up in the tree, it really was character interpretation at its best. And Johny Depps Gilbert Grape character was able to successfully portray a reluctancy in his embarrassment of his overweight mother, fine shades in his of acting that overall made this a classic piece of art.
