While the story of Ashraf Marwan is undoubtedly a fascinating one and deserves to have a movie made about it, I feel that this one misses the mark by quite a bit. I'm not referring to the trivial anachronisms and goofs (like the wrong Arabic accents, or KC and the Sunshine Band song played before its time) which have already been pointed out in other reviews, but to much more substantial historical inaccuracies and omissions. Main examples: 1) I could find no record of the botched attempt on the El Al plane in Rome which opens the movie, much less that Marwan personally smuggled the (sabotaged) weapons for it or was nearby when the Italian police closed in... seems like an incredibly risky thing to do for an Egyptian presidential aide 2) The movie's ending presents 2 false alarms of an imminent Egyptian invasion as a premeditated plan thought up to lull Israel into complacency. In fact there was only 1 false alarm (in May 1973) and Sadat postponed it due to a Syrian request, not because of some masterful plan of deception. 3) If Marwan really thought a no-win outcome for a war would be the best guarantee for peace, how was he so sure that warning Israel ahead of time would achieve that? Maybe his betrayal of information would be the one to tip the balance and ensure an Israeli victory, preventing the exact outcome he wanted to achieve. Which brings us to the main one: 4) No real explanation or hint on why Marwan would spy for the Israelis. Seems it was done for money. To say it was all part of grand master plan to level the playing field and bring peace to the Middle Easy seems a bit hard to believe. Other than that: it was suspenseful, the 70s atmosphere was largely credible, so overall it was not a waste of time to me.

In my country this was broadcast in eight episodes of a bit less than an hour each, where each season in Havana, which equals 1 murder mystery, was split into 2 episodes. The good part: if you (like me) are a fan of Havana's special atmosphere, with its old 50s cars, revolutionary murals, and decaying colonial-era houses, then it'll be worth your while watching the show and you'll enjoy every minute of it. We get beautiful Havana landscapes, amazing drone shots, views of streets and neighborhoods both poor and rich, peeks inside grand houses of yesteryear, some in better condition, some in worse, old telephones, wonderful decor. The colors, the atmosphere are stunning. The people part is also great - we get to see beautiful Cubans all around (and they are very beautiful), along with some less beautiful of course, but that's life. We also get to see most of the beautiful ones having sex, and they make a great sight. Still on the positive side, themes that might once have been taboo in Communist Cuba are freely discussed, including drug use in schools, official corrpution, people escaping to the U.S., past repression of homosexuals, drag queens, parodies of the official ideology ("machismo-leninism" was a good one), etc. The impression was that nothing was off the table, even for this production which is Cuban-Spanish. Now to the weaker spot: the 4 actual police mysteries. Without giving anything away, and without being an expert in police dramas (as it's not my favorite genre), I found their resolution to be very simplistic. At first each murder looks really baffling, with many suspects and no clues, and then at some point towards the end, one of the suspects breaks down as if by magic and tells everything, where they really didn't have to. A bit disingenious, and disappointing. All in all as I said I'd recommend the series for Havana fans, just for its color. To me it was a pleasure to watch and made me want to go back and visit.

What an absolute delight to the senses. The melancholy music by Ennio Morricone, the 1940s scenery of a small Sicilian town, the amazing beauty and dignified demeanor of Monica Bellucci, the unflinching portrait of small-town gossip and jealousy - all combine to make a magnificent story with moments of incredible humor, sadness, passion and redemption. I drank in every minute of it. Highly recommended
