This is the kind of slippery, pretentious film, that always tries to remark that it's talking about important issues in an intelligent way, but fails to be intelligent or anything but PRETENTIOUS. It Tries, but fails to be surrealistic. If you want to watch a surreal film try Buñuel's "Un chien andalou" or "L'age d'or". Those films from the 1920's are much more surreal, original, modern, innovative films. About Jim Carrey: I just see him keep playing "The Mask", no matter the role he tries. He's a complete collection of tics. Displaying the same face of grief all the film through is not what I consider good acting. He was good at 'The Truman's Show'. In other films I always see Jim Carrey, not the character he tries to give life to.

A story about immigration in Europe; about two human beings who struggle for a decent life in a First World that won't let them achieve it by regular means,thus leaving them alone in the hands of evil and corruption.

It portraits the diverse characters with accuracy and harshness, thanks to efficient acting by Audrey Tatou and Sergi Lopez, in his best role after "Harry, un ami qui vous veut du bien". The film has a 'not-so-Happy,sweet jet sour ending,that leaves the characters almost where they started. Stephen Frears,once again, makes his most personal movies in Europe,where he seems to have a higher extent of freedom for shooting stories like this one, that need more risks to be assumed.

This story about a man's 28 year struggle for a death that would liberate him from his already dead body becomes a masterpiece to be remembered,thanks to a team of artists in a state of grace. Directed, written,edited and scored by Alejandro Amenabar, it touches you from the very first images, and doesn't leave your eyes and your heart to rest until the last credits, thanks to Alejandro and a group of wonderful actors and actresses at their best. Bardem is an acting animal:One of those few comedians that can make a masterpiece from almost any character, the supporting actresses are great in their roles and the story is told with such a sensibility that one laughs and cries in the same minute, as we used to do with the great old masterpieces. The year's best film in all senses. 10 / 10
