If you're a fan of Liam Neeson's action films, you will like this movie. I liked the pacing, the characters, the setting, and the overall storyline better than the original Ice Road. I found it a very entertaining escape that isn't trying too hard to be something that it isn't. The lack of ice roads? Honestly it didn't bother me. The Kathmandu setting is visually stunning with winding mountain roads that keep you on edge. Critics might call the plot formulaic or gripe about the tonal shifts, but I found the balance refreshing. It's a movie that knows it's an action sequel and is not trying to reinvent the genre.
Never imagined that a show like this could exist but here we are. I've always loved movies and shows with themes of political rebellion and survival set in a dystopian future. It reminds me of The Divergent Series or The Hunger Games but adding in the familiarity of scripture. The way the writers reimagined the book of acts felt completely fresh to me and I never felt bored or that it was predictable even though I have read the book that inspired it. It challenged my assumptions about what it must have been like on the day of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit fell upon the church. It also challenged my assumptions about who these early Christians were as people and how they related to each other. The acting is also excellent. Well done to the creators. I'm truly looking forward to each episode.
I was moved to write my first review ever after watching this. Val's lifelong love of art and his pursuit of truth are evident throughout the film. The moments some people dismissed as "glossing over" parts of his story to me were moments where he resolved to be grateful despite his difficulties. His gratitude and love for his family really shine and you get the idea that he doesn't waste life feeling sorry for himself no matter what tragedy he has experienced. I didn't appreciate his talent until I saw this. I respected his standing up for himself on set as well even though it caused him to be misunderstood. This is a great film, especially if you're an artist. I loved it.
