I'd never heard of this film until it popped up in my Netflix suggestions but the cast list was impressive so I gave it a watch. My first impression was that it was a bit of light fun without much depth and that perception solidified the further I got through the film.

Many of the film's main plot points I found fairly predictable and unsurprising. A large part of the film's premise revolves around an alternate version of our world where certain technologies developed more in line with a 50s sci-fi view of how things would be. That coupled with a post-war dystopia setting immediately brought to mind the Fallout series of games (and now TV series) that was based on the same premise, but did it much better. There were other main elements in the story that I won't mention in the interests of spoilers that I likewise thought were very derivative.

I was surprised to read on here that this film cost as much as films in the Avatar and Starwars series. It had good effects, but not good enough that I would have placed its budget in the same ballpark as films like that.

Performances from the aforementioned impressive cast were decent. But the plot was pretty meagre. Overall, an enjoyable enough, but ultimately forgettable way to spend a couple of hours. I don't expect this film to have much staying power.

After seeing the superb 2019 Joker film I had high hopes for this one. Especially once I started watching it since it began well. I enjoyed the story. The acting from both Phoenix and Lady Gaga was good.

I was previously aware that the movie was more or less a musical. I'm not a fan of musicals but I thought that using that to give the audience a sense of Arthur Fleck's confused state of mind fit. And it did work - to a point. However it was overdone to the point where it overshadowed the overall story. It reached the point where the continued musical numbers became tedious and boring. By the time the film reached it's conclusion I was no longer riveted like I had been earlier. I was pretty much bored and waiting for it to be done with.

Story-wise, I felt that everything about it made sense. I just got the sense that the story wasn't told well. I'm no expert on movie-making but I just felt that it missed the mark. And the ending, while again seemed to make sense, just seemed to be done poorly.

I didn't really know what to expect with this movie. The film brings together most of the main actors from the original Beverly Hills Cop films playing the same characters. I didn't expect it to lean so much in to the comedy. It's almost like they couldn't decide whether it was still part of an 80s action movie franchise or full-blown comedy. There were plenty of cheeky nods to all the tired old 80s action movie cliches. It wasn't quite as obvious and over the top a parody as something like Kung Fury but pretty much a parody of 80s action films all the same.

A fun popcorn flick, not to be taken seriously.
