I am obligated to practice French as part of language acquisition. (So I had a reason to watch this film). I feel it was a really good and interesting film. It is a story that is different than what we would see in the United States. It is very French.
It was interesting to observe the main character's life on a trout farm. For fun, the family goes out bowling with other another family. They also go to many early 80s French and Japanese discotheques. It was really interesting.
I think I need to watch the film again because there were certain sequences that were hard for me to follow. The ending was really good, I thought. I also felt the performances by Jeanne Moreau and Jean-Pierre Cassel, could have been Oscar-nominated.
In conclusion, with French films, they cast actors who Act the roles really well, even if they have smaller shoulders or no butt. Whereas American films cast gorgeous people, who may not be as advanced as actors. I feel this film is worth watching, and different from American films.

Hi. Rewatching this movie for the first time as an adult. Yes, top notch cinematography, Acting, soundtrack. Other than that this movie is too slow by today's standards. Also, I did not relate to the white imperialist people. They don't wk and tell everybody what to do. Most importantly (I see as an adult), their relationship promoted open relationships and cheating. Karen gets married to her husband, and then she lives away from him for half the movie. If u were born after the invention of the iPhone, this movie might be too slow for you. Too slow and not relatable by today's standards. Even tho well acted, well produced, and great shots.
Hi. I had been looking for this to appear on a Streamer for over 10 years. I do not believe it came out on DVD either. I've wanted to see this for a while. This is not the same as "Dangerous Liaisons." They were both adapted from the same source material (letters written from 1700s court). I was very impressed. Annette Bening nails an extremely complicated character. This was one of her 1st roles. Coli Firth was also brand new. I am a fan of Meg Tilly as well, and Milos Foreman. I liked how the sets and locations did remind me of "Amadeus," (also done by Foreman). Overall this had the same characters as DL and some plots the same, but there were many different scenes. Some characters were more developed in the other version. I would recommend this, but these movies are apples and oranges of the same source material. Also, beautiful locations in France.
