Trimark's 'American Tragedy' tracks Marcia Clark's book, 'Without A Doubt' so well I wondered if she hadn't cooperated in the screenplay. It bothered me that this movie is not listed in Maltin's Movie Guide and I wondered why, but then I see here that it's a TV production, and Maltin does not list those. Much of course was left out, most of which would have been even more incriminating. The movie is very well done, quite restrained and objective in my view. It is 'without a doubt' and at the very least a damning testimony to the flaws in our jury system. The one strong point in the book that the movie glossed over or even gave a wrong impression about was Judge Ito's marked favoritism toward the defensive team of lawyers throughout the trial. All in all, a very interesting and important film.

Good enough movie, great story. Abelard and Heloise share one of the great love stories of history. Throw in the religious environment of the middle ages, the clergy's sacred vow of chastity, and a life long enforced penitence, not to mention the unmentionable punishment for any male, and you have a worthwhile film if at all well-made, which this one is. It's a shame that more meaningful movies like this one can't be made available to the American public. The U.S. version has been cut of some sexual content to avoid an R rating, but the love scenes are still erotic and moving. Period costuming also add to the color and enjoyment of 'Stealing Heaven'. As an added bonus, you get philosophical and theological argument and debate. A really worthwhile film overall.

Fallen Idol is a great film, with all actors in fine form, especially Ralph Richardson, and including the boy. Richardon is the embassy butler married to a shrewish, domineering wife. He has an illicit, albeit discreet love affair with a beautiful young embassy secretary - you can't help but feel for them both. When the shrew is found done in by a fall down the ornate embassy staircase, the wonderful gentlemen detective types enter, ever so politely, of course. Fallen Idol is an example of the best of British movie-making: low key, sympathetic, civilized. The boy's pet snake is a nice touch. A gem; a good example of the type of fine film that I wish could be made more available here. A Graham Greene story, directed by Carol Reed - what more could we want. Another great Carol Reed 'lost' film is 'Outcast of the Islands', also with Ralph Richardson.
