The Fiftieth Anniversary Edition is made from the original 35mm film without any attempt to clean the film of interference lines, or clarify the print in any way. Unfortunately this takes away from the enjoyment of one of the classic benchmark scifi films of the fifties. I have a VHS tape of the film that has a better print. This DVD is also usually priced higher than other DVDs or prints. It is definitely not worth it. Try other versions before you buy this one.
What looks like an Australian movie starring non-stars keeps you in suspense to find out what the bone snatcher really is. The desert locale helps to bring that other-worldly scene missing in so many of today's horror movies. Fairly well done cinematography; acting could have been better, and the script. Still, I think it's worth watching. (Unfortunately I saw it on the SCIFI channel so it was cut to shreds.) The "creature" may seem too fantastic to some, but its actually a play on the creatures in Michael Crichton's book PREY (nano-monsters!). I've wasted time on far worse!
This is really a well done movie with a great (yes, great)over the top performance by Johnny Depp. Unfortunately it's also a little too long. It seems like they were having so much fun they didn't want it to end. And, of course, once again the damsel is not in distress, but fights the ghostly pirates without fear - though Sigourney Weaver she's not. Highly recommended for light summer entertainment that may become one of Disney's top grossers of all time (it's already in the top 25 of all time box office movies).
