At age 22, Schweikle began his study of the "Old West." He began reading everything he could find, including periodicals like "True West," Frontier Times" and "Old West." In 1972 he re-located to Durango Colorado. At that time, Durango was still a rip-roaring old west town. His interest in photography led him into the mountains searching for "Old Timers" to photograph. He met and became friends with men and women, some as old as 80. He spent a winter isolated in the old mining town of Silverton Colorado where he socialized with, partied with and listened to the stories they loved to tell. Many of them were alive, circa 1907, and had wild tails to tell that they witnessed or were told to them. Their speech reflected that time period.

His first movie job, in 1976, was on a Roger Corman film as the still photographer. After that wrapped, he began getting call as a location scout. Because he lived in the famous "Four Corners Area" of New Mexico, Arizona, Utah and Colorado, most of the jobs were for period westerns and several old west themed commercials. He worked on films using the Durango to Silverton narrow gauge railroad and the Cumbre’s Toltec narrow-gauge train that ran from Antonito Colorado to Chama New Mexico. Those jobs included "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" as locations, and "Where the Hell's that Gold" Location Manager and "The Claim." as Unit Production Manager.
