I've seen this story a number of times before, in different movies. There's really nothing to add, a new take or a new view would have improved things quite a lot.
McQueen maybe tries too hard here with multiple stories, Dickensian nasty thugs and a quite anodyne or sterile take on his focus that I won't mention, but is writ large here. He may have got stuck for new ideas??
The acting is great. Sets are cool, special effects very good.
People are interesting, unpredictable and suprising. This movie tries to box people into something that is not human, things don't add up, it's got an unreal feel all around that is hard to recognise or even connect with, it lost me.
A groundbreaking director or a lazy writer or lack of insight and experience of the world? Make up your own mind, I won't watch this movie again.

From the start of this movie I was captivated by the gentleness of things I know from my life. The love story is played so very well by very competent actors dealing with a world that may be dangerous or end up being heavan itself. Choppy waters that we all swim in the madness that we live in.
The connection and care and love is very real here, so many parts of this film I have lived myself and I am so grateful for the people who made this story into film.
Not hard to say but as a gay man everywhere in the world I've been...we have the same/similar things about us and this sensitive, strong, human story speaks for many of us, thank you film makers and all who constructed this for its honesty, much respect.
