Indeed, this is one of The Blacklist's greatest and most underrated episodes, largely because it defies many structural elements of the show. Yes, the episode eventually transitions into typical Blacklist fare with action-packed drama and bad guys running amuck, but we are also treated to something more rare: an exclusive, domesticated and humanized portrayal of our beloved protagonist. Most of us have grown to love the "Red" we know: criminal mastermind and quintessential tough guy. However, the version of Red displayed here is not only jovial and passionate, but (for once) smitten with an entirely different character. This was a wonderful side of Raymond Reddington that we seldom get to see. Somewhere off-screen, his connection with the benevolent, charming and bird-loving Anne graduated into a relationship, though it is continuously reinforced as il-advised via Dembe or Red himself (I assume so that viewers don't get "too" used to things). But I was happy the writers chose to bring Anne back and carry the two lovebirds' in this direction--even if it was only transient. And let's be honest: Anne and Red's chemistry was absolute FIRE. Seldom are we given a glimpse of Red's potential as a husband or partner. Not only did this perspective disrupt the weekly monotony of Red's violent, chaotic world, but it also exposed an inherent part of Red's needs: the chance to love a woman and enjoy a normal life. At one point, we even witness the world's most dangerous and highly pursued man sleeping contentedly in his girlfriend's lap. Suffice it to say, the scene was incredibly adorable, but it also demonstrated Red's willingness to let his guard down in the presence of those he loves. In a way, viewers are reminded that, despite Raymond Reddington perceived superpowers, he's just a man. What he inherently craves in life is no different than the rest of us, even if it's an entirely futile prospect.
