Let's get real, this is not the first Mexican documentary as some people says, only they don't see further than what over-commercial exhibit brings. México has a lot of long and short documentary films, and this is not even close to be the greatest one of them. It has no theme (people who actually know something about movies knows that theme and story are totally different), is only one collection of happenings on Mexican boxer Chávez around his career... and that's all!! So is surprising that Luna, who has encourage to promote Mexican documentaries, bring to theaters a crap like this. If you are from out of Mexico, and you want to see some good documentaries, watch something about Juan Carlos Rulfo, Yordi Capo, the short films of Mexican students or else but this movie.
I just saw the movie few days ago on the Festival De Guadalajara. I saw it and it got me going. The acting is fabulous, every actor takes his part to a great level. And the first sequence is a delight for the eyes, and also the main actor. The irreverence of the movie, from the funny to the disgusting (And all in between) remind us that aesthetic doesn't necessarily means beautiful. With this wicked game of the aesthetic on art department, acting, screenplay and photo, you can't do anything but fall in love, and identify with the main character. I must say that I haven't read the book, but the writer must to be very pleased if he act on the movie (Find him out!) I just hope that it finds a good distributor, because I wanna have it on my collection, and I hope you too.
I disagree with the comment above. The movie treats, indeed, some serious problems. But I don't think that in no sense the movie wanted to make fun of it (I don't understand... Did you though it was a comedy?)The meaning of the movie is to not let the world smash you out, I try to go on with your life (Either your gay or not). If Mr. Y. thinks that something laughable, means he has issues.
By the other way, just see when it was made: 1994, when many of the gay people went out of the closet, and demanded to be treated the same way that a straight guy is, and try to clean the image of "depravation" that some gay icons made in the 80's, and let the people know that they are regular common persons, just like anybody else.
Is not the best short that I've seen of this thematic, but is good enough. For been a short-film, that not always have enough resources,(believe me, is not very easy to find support) must say that the montage works, good acting, and the story has dynamism. I just think that maybe the photography it could be better.
