What a ride! I went to see the film hoping to like it and not find I had wasted my time. I loved this film. Wendy Ord (dir./wrt.) did a great job of leading you in so many directions and fooling you with most of them. The film has a dark heart warming sense about it that make you wonder how a film this different was not made by a big studio. I'm impressed by singer Melanie Doane's acting as she seemed to be born out of the rugged yet beautiful setting of the film.
There is a lot to look at during the movie, but most kids don't watch animated films for the scenery. Characters are well developed at the expense of a satisfactory ending. Wilbur, voiced by John Candy & Frank, voice by Wayne Robson are great additions to the rescuers' cast. My beef with the film is at the end when Gordy says let's go home, there are the loose ends of the poor animals still in cages that we don't see freed and we never get to see joy on Gordy's Mother's face on his return from the dead. I guess they just ran out of ink.
Howard has the knack of knowing when to give the audience the eye, with a just perfect leer. This film is one that shows you that it is possible to break the 4th wall to include the audience in the scene. A movie any teenage boy would love and should be viewed by all the staff at "MAXIM". When the film was first shown on TV here in North America it was a little scandalous. The English were not as prudish and had more fun that way.
