I'm not a big fan of Gunsmoke, but I do enjoy the occasional old western show/movie. I decided to check up on what I was watching on here and came across some odd reviews.
Being a certain age, I find it odd when we take our current cultural attitudes and beliefs and compare them to other historical periods. This episode was aired more than 50 years ago, and received rave reviews for Richard Baseheart's performance.
Denigrating Mr Baseheart's performance or the "onscreen chemistry" of any of the cast is weird, it was a tv show. A popular TV show that had a following and decided to showcase other actors in its later run seasons.
Strangely enough, people still valued characters like Captain Slingo back then, because he was boiling with life, and nothing was going to stop him from achieving his dreams, he embodied an American spirit.
