I am tired of reading reviews of this film with the words 'oh dear the potential'' or some rubbish like that. I mean have you ever thought that maybe some of us did not want a brain dead Summer Blockbuster with 'franchise potential' mass destruction Id4 type movie and would prefer a well made ,well acted character based film instead? Yes, you may blame the Posters, the Trailers and the hype that precedented this movie I think they actually did intend to dupe you into thinking it would be a sort of Apocalypse Now with Dragons and stuff ,but there are people like myself who were pleasantly surprised that it was not, OK it was'nt the best movie ever made but it was certainly the best dragon movie I've seen. With good performances from all involved, A grown up Christian Bale and the underrated Matthew McConaughey,his character Van Zan is one of the baddest mofo's in film for a long time. So take my advice people 'dont believe the hype'.
Robert Townsend for me was not the ideal choice to make this, nor would I have used Beyonce Knowles as my first choice to play the lead Carmen Jones in this updated version of Bizet's classic opera 'Carmen'.
In the films defence I will say the music was great,and she may not act that well but Beyonce can sing people and she looks hot. Remixing some of the original Carmen score worked really well and Mekhi Phiffer was as always very good. On Mos Def I will say he is a peculiar guy, sometimes it seems he is acting real good, all laid back and sometimes it seems as if he is heavily stoned and cannot remember his lines!
Overall the concept of remaking Carmen into this MTV hip hopera was a very good idea and I think it worked well, given most of the cast were non actors.

A Truly brilliant film. Until I had seen the film in its entirety I had always heard others talk of the brilliance of these films but I myself had only seen bits over the years. I considered myself somewhat of a film buff until I read somewhere that 'you know nothing until you have seen Satyajit Rai' how true that was , I found myself falling in love with this masterpiece of cinema.
