(Very-very mild spoiler inside) This was one of the best movies I have seen this year, reminding me of what a great actor Robin Williams was. I truly enjoyed the point it aimed to get across, namely the shallowness of society, and how miserable losers get literally sainted under false pretenses. I pretty much knew how the movie would end, but will be honest, I secretly hoped that it would NOT end that way, allowing our protagonist to have the last laugh over the idiots he was surrounded by - a message that would have been equally justifiable. Nevertheless, the actual ending didn't disappoint either; it was sweet, and consistent with the dark humor that made the entire movie truly enjoyable.
This was a decent and well-acted serial killer flick, inspired by John Wayne Gacy and the likes. Like other reviewers pointed out, it would have been nice to explore the characters a little better. The Grabber was a bit clichéd, and unlike in Silence of the Lambs, we didn't learn much about his psyche, which could have added an interesting dimension to the story. Also, Ethan Hawke is not who we would picture as the typical serial killer, but then again, BTK looked like neighbor that knows how to fix anything, and Gacy was a dead-ringer for Benny Hill. With all that said, I did enjoy the movie, and OMG, "Fox on the Run"?! That was one of my all-time favorites, and I haven't heard it for 40 years. With all things considered, I give this movie a solid 6.5.
I clicked on this movie to read its synopsis because of its cover art (not the one shown here, but where the protagonists are standing in a black circle), then the synopsis was intriguing enough to watch the whole movie - and I wasn't disappointed. While enjoying the unfolding plot, I was constantly worried that the ending would be lame, particularly considering the relatively low score (6.3 at the time of this writing). But the different twists throughout the movie kept it engaging, and the ending didn't leave me dissatisfied either. In my opinion, the movie deserves a solid 6.8, and is highly recommended as a nice evening entertainment.
