  • Rising above the valleys

It's got a lot of deep themes, such as responsibility, friendship (two highly different men bond in a common vision), sacrificial love (risking one's life to save another's), capitalist greed vs social benevolence, stubborn pride as potentially dangerous (jumping a red light; not taking adrenaline help when needed), submission to deity (meaning of life), forgiveness (at various levels), and unborn life as precious and its own selfhood (not a callous, Your body, your choice pressure from a partner to avoid their moral responsibility).

There's good advice, such as times to let go of the past, and when getting to the next turn after moral falls, trying to take the high road and not to wallow in sin. It suffers from a common error of being 'born again'; asserting we're of value to God-nope, we're utterly superfluous but precious to him; and a more serious fallacy of God having died (no, it was God the son (not 'God') as a mortal human being (not as noncarnate son), who died): Antioch over Alexandria, so to speak.

The main story is of two guys (black (Derrick) & white (Michael)) being sponsored to take a dangerous mountain climb they both have longed to climb, viz Mount 'Chiconcagua' (Aconcagua?). There are subplots of profit over or under people, of lying vs honesty, and of pleasure over parenting (the latter includes the former). The climb doesn't go as well as hoped, but perhaps it goes far better. Judge for yourself.

  • Entertainment over history

IMO a passible series, drawing a moderately accurate picture, sometimes a bit too creative in adding fiction to history, more fitting if adding history to fiction.

Why was David deemed a bastard, and his mother deceased in his early years, when the primary documents suggest no more than perhaps a second wife after a previous wife died, and indeed say that his mother was alive and kicking well after Goliath's death, when David had to hide from King Saul (1 Sam.15:3)? I can see a case for David's sisters being step-sisters (2 Sam.17:25 allows but does not require that speculation), but undermining the full marriage of David's mother to Jesse is IMO unwarranted. I presume when youngest but competent, each son had taken a turn as being prime shepherd, and no shame attached. The smattering of other texts of David's alleged parentage, do not build a strong case.

Why did the Medium of Endor play such a part, when the Bible merely introduced her only at Saul's terminal point, when, as ex-Spiritualist medium Raphael Gasson noted, after her familiarity with demons impersonating ghosts, she was amazed when meeting for the first time a real live ghost, namely Samuel?

Why do we hear Jonathan saying, "we do not speak his name", when in fact the very psalms are replete with God's name, Yahweh (YHWH if you stick to consonants), though later perhaps post-exilic psalms dropped God's name. Ashamed of their abhorrent sinfulness (Jr.3:8), in the Babylonian Exile the remnants of Israel, the Kingdom of Judah vacated use of God's name based on their shame. And ha-shem is a complete anachronism and vexatious to the ears. If one must soften for ethno-Jewish ears, why not use the older German form, Jahveh? But today's Jonathan spoke utter tripe.

Why does the series present so strongly the idea that angels (presumably with male biological bits) got a little too close to real women (need we define?), and Bob's yer uncle, oversized kiddies came forth? While Gen.6 has the mystery of ancient folklore, gigantism often has a less legendary etiology, and we need nor more postulate from a certain theory around Gen.6, than take Nb.13:33 as more than mere hype intended to scare the masses. Later intertestamental literature took flights of fantasy, but giants kept their boots on the ground.

But however misconceived, this series can be good for family viewing and discussion, and the "foul language" warnings are a joke, and if too quickly evoked, turn "foul" into meaninglessness.

  • Some spiritual snags

John Wallace was a nominal Christian, raised by his mother never to let his conscience bother him too much, and was blind to the Christian teaching of all races and people being equal as imago dei. He threw around meaningless talk about his (and other's) god/s, and prayed as the idea, almighty god. He sought more to be God than to obey God.

Mayhayley Lancaster was locally called a 'witch'. She claimed to occultly see the victim's cremation and ashes to water, and to be a medium. The idea that she was right was not really questioned, even in calling her as a court witness. The idea that her sight came from the demonic who impersonate the deceased at séances (so the witness of former medium Raphael Gasson, in his, The Challenging Counterfeit), was never even raised, nor whether the police should allow spiritual damage to society in order to reduce social damage by using the sometimes accurate occult to help solve crimes. She spouted biblical texts as can the devil.

Apart from some spiritual gullibility, I think the best character was Lamar Potts, as committed to doing his job and serving justice-righteous. Johnny Cash & his wife were genuine Christians in real life. His parting and sincere shot, "I'll pray for you", was discounted by the egotist Wallace, but showed his heart.
