The beginning of the film is beautifully shot, with the 'Martian' landscape and the dust storm generating an ominous atmosphere. However, there is too much 'shaky cam' for much of the movie, in badly-lit scenes that are sometimes confusing to watch. Of course the lack of decent lighting makes the film cheaper to make. The acting is generally passable, although it is hard to believe that there would be so many British astronauts on a mission like this; most would probably be American. I usually like films like this (horror-sci-fi), but the storyline is so derivative that I found little to keep me engaged. It is also difficult to become involved in any of the characters, because they are underdeveloped. Whatever happened to original film-making? Why are directors shooting movies that don't have a finished screenplay? My advice; in general, any film that has less than 3 stars on Netflix or less than 6 on IMDb should not be taken seriously.
This is a movie that seems to have no purpose. The way that the sound effects were generated in the film is mildly interesting, and the xenophobia that the main character experienced made me believe that the storyline would go somewhere. However, this was not the case. Sitting through this, I found it hard to understand why the actors were even drawn to the material; it is so uninteresting. Technically the film has its merits, and it might be relevant for someone who has worked as a sound effects technician and editor in movies, but for the general population it is probably a waste of time. I know that it contains references to Italian horror movies of the 70's and 80's, but so what? My advice is to stay away.
