I went to see this movie based on the accolades surrounding it. I should probably just stick to movies that I think will be good. I accept that it is an important subject to tackle and their story needs to be heard. But beyond that the movie is tedious, slow and quite frankly boring. In general I see the movie theatre as a place to go to be entertained, enthralled and mesmerised. During this performance I was none of these, I felt sad for the characters and I thought it was an important topic. But it probably needed to be on Newsnight with a good reporter doing a documentary. Not quasi entertainment in an expensive movie theatre. I think directors these days forget they are making product for a PAYING audience. But I agree an important topic. Ah well....onwards.

To be honest that is what redeems this movie along with a couple of catchy songs "Popular" and "Gravity". I actually like the characters even the supporting cast. The problem is a sub standard story, sub standard acting and sub standard songs which will all disappear like the ones in Mary Poppins 2. I cannot get away from the feeling this movie is just milking the mass market who, including me, will go see anything thrown at us. The plot tries to be new but it's really just a long stretch of how the witch of the west became the ahem, wicked witch of the west. I think several of the actors are good or potentially good even Ariana Grande who throws everything at it, but none achieve it. ( Compare Gemma Arterton in the Critic where she does an amazing job of portraying a bad actress.) So, sorry guys, I really tried to enjoy it and it's a good one for kids. As I said, I actually liked most of the characters, I just wish the material could have brought them all out more.

Ok so you have to be a real sci-fi nerd to enjoy movies like this but I really think the critics got it wrong. The story was interesting, special effects created a great dystopia. There was an unforeseen twist at the end. The action was fast paced and you could understand most of what was spoken (unlike muffled Oppenheimer) Above all the cast really seemed to be enjoying themselves. I enjoyed this much to the point I may buy the DVD/Download when it is released so I can watch it again. Cate Blanchett was probably outside her comfort zone but she handled it well and looked like she was enjoying it. The little R2D2 style robot was full of character. Shame on the critics, they got this one wrong.
