I have only watched one episode but can already tell this is a groundbreaking show. It has that honest raw queer depiction like Queer As Folk back then but with a deeper sensitivity akin to the film Beautiful Things. It balances humour, coming of age drama and sexuality with perfection. The lead Ellis Howard is fantastic and so are the rest of the cast. I must admit I was worried it would be one of these overstylized and over the top LGBTQ dramas with ridiculous storylines and fierce characters. It's the opposite, it shows the flaws, doubts and struggle of a young queer character but in a funny and original way. The writing reminds me of author Douglas Stuart but lighter. Also the UK 2000s rendition is spot on. I know where the story is going and I'm impatient to follow it.
Out of the 2 recent crime dramas with deaf leads, this is the better one. Code Of Silence has a far fetched premise but is so honest with it we're up for the ride. Great cast helps a lot but it's the slow building romance hiding in plain sight that makes this show a stand out. The main characters are flawed and constantly asked to question their moral compass which makes for a very fun watch. Yes the ending is very silly and unbelievable but this must be the first time a crime drama builds its storyline around a blossoming and forbidden love. Season 2 please! And with the same leads if possible!
I will admit I couldn't get past the first 15 minutes. I have always loved British crime dramas, even the quirky ones like Midsomer Murders, small villages, small mentality...
But this is simply unwatchable. The dialogues are some of the worst I've ever heard, like an unfunny kid show or a badly translated telenovela. Tim Spall is a great actor and that's part of the problem. The minute he appears and manages to make the bad lines tolerable, the rest of the cast suddenly look like the worst actors in the World. It's an art to overact in a bold and funny way and all the actors here, including the lead detective, are appalling and embarrassing. This show is the definition of cringe.
