The version I saw was probably the longest and seemed to be padding to increase the runtime. I didn't see the need for the flashbacks that repeated over just so the film could reach a point where the story started over. It was especially strange the way the Martians ran through the tunnel over again in repeat loops. It's often compared to Invasion of the Body Snatchers but this story is quite different. Invaders does have some interesting special effects and haunting music, but the other film was able to make the most out of less without repeating over. The counterfeit people in the cave were scary.
Sometimes I think these bad B grade thrillers and horror movies were made as publicity body guards to shield Traci Lords from obsessive fans of her adult career and more commonly, those who wanted to chastise her for lying about her age. Many of these films were classics of the genre. In the late nineties a new image seemed to develop with lightly colored clothes and pale makeup giving her a ghost like appearance in films like this. Jeff Fahey plays a magazine editor in San Francisco with a thick southern accent. In SF, of all places, why does he have that? I liked the first viewing on home video which seemed to emphasize the erotic undertones while the cable version was more into violence, as usual. She meets a strange Asian looking woman on the plane and suddenly they are close friends. Her boyfriend has a sinister motive for bringing them together. Such contrivances elude logic, bodies and evidence are perfectly hidden, and a potentially interesting movie short changes us. Her editor often says, "You can run, but you can't hide" a phrase often used in Traci's book she wrote, This was used in the film, too.
The film is so boring and empty during the fiirst two thirds with constant spooky music that never breaks off for someone to shove a quarter in a pay phone or grab breakfast at a coffee shop. I also had trouble tying two characters together as the same girl from different time periods. It ends in quite a gore fest for the sake of having a gore fest. Some devil in a black bunny suit is the reason for it all. Some parts had me laugh just because the music was the only scary element involved in perfectly ordinary events. If Osgood Perkins wasn't the son of Anthony Perkins and Emma Roberts wasn't the daughter of Eric Roberts, I doubt the film could have been produced or released at all. Too many films are produced just because important people who have the right connections made them while hundreds of better projects from "unknowns" get shredded and recycled.
