This movie has had a lot written and said about it. A lot of it seems to come from people who haven't even watched it(?) I definitely went into it the first time expecting something like Euphoria, based on what I've seen others say, but it far exceeds those expectations.
It's feels reminiscent of Assassination Nation, while being distinctive and fresh in its approach. It very much fits into the kind of modern Indie Sleaze aesthetic my generation was so fond of. Yet it has a lot of wit, and lacks gratuitous overly sexed visuals that plague many films and tv shows that try to emulate it today.
I don't necessarily see it as a timeless film, but it's an interesting encapsulation of the culture of 2022. I think more people should see it.

Season 1 was decent enough. My only real criticisms were in that the show clearly demonstrated an aversion to casting dark-skinned Black women for more than one episode, and one character abandoned her entire storyline after having sex once.
Otherwise the show was interesting. I liked the intent to use the Halo property to critique militarism. I have very few experiences playing the Halo games, so I didn't go into the series with intense expectations. The show moved quickly enough that it never felt like it dragged. Sometimes so quickly they'd seem to forget to show us how we got from A to B with certain storylines. Nothing too egregious though.
I appreciated the mix of humor with the more serious themes. I love that we had split the time between the Spartans and Kwan Ha's character, to give us both perspectives. It feels fresh and unique for a military/army series.
I also appreciate that it was committed to putting present day cultures and languages into a sci-fi series. Creators often like to perpetuate a world where only white people make it to the future. So that was a nice change, even if the colorism/misogynoir wasn't left behind.
BUT THEN, we get to season 2...
The only thing I can find as explanation, is the backlash this show received for veering away from the games. The creators capitulated to that criticism so severely they quite literally nuke every darn thing that made the show interesting.
Entire plot lines, and character arcs dropped. The two seasons feel so incongruous with each other, you'd think you skipped the actual second season and just landed in the third. The original problems of the first season become glaring and more obvious.
We bury our gays, we kill two dark-skinned Black characters... representation that's in very short supply for a series made in the 2020's. Everything they set up in the first season just doesn't exist in the second season, to an almost astonishing degree.
It's frustrating that this show got cancelled when it had a decent start, but this second season pretty much sealed their fate.
Shows should be given more time to find their footing, and while I think listening to criticism is good, this production stands as an example of what happens when you're unable to discern between criticisms/critiques that are worthy of your attention and those that aren't.
Because the series didn't need to be the games, you can play the freaking games whenever you want. It was on its way to being its own thing, and instead of sticking to their guns, they just gave up and you can feel it as an audience member.
Otherwise the performances are great. It looks really cool. Season 1 Cortana was better (no offense to the actress, it's not your fault). Kai should've kept her hair. Loved Riz's storyline. Miranda deserved so much better. Halsey can die in a ditch. Where are the memories?! Pablo Schreiber should play Batman. Gamer bros, get bent.
