Us is a good movie, but its very unique in that most movies I give a 7/10 have quite a bit of mediocrity to them; not so with this one. Everything is either amazing or just quite bad. Lets start with the good. First of all it must be stated just how meticulously crafted the film is. Jordan Peele left no stone unturned in terms of foreshadowing and symbolism and you could watch this movie 20 times and still not catch everything he included. It truly is a masterclass in how to use detail to tell a story. The acting is fantastic especially from Lupita Nyong'o who does a fantastic job playing two totally different roles. The cinematography, music, and comedy are all top notch(to be expected of Jordan Peele), and the tension in the film is fantastic, there are some scenes in there that are legitimately very anxiety inducing. The biggest thing in the movies favor is the absolutely genius premise and the way Peele uses it as a means of social commentary. Peele manages to deliver a very interesting and somewhat radical political message about the current state of Capitalism and the American dream, and it's because of this aspect of the film that I would highly recommend you watch Us, despite its problems. Speaking of which I think the movie has a few major flaws in it. Firstly there is, in my view, quite a major tone issue. It feels like the movie doesn't quite want to commit to being a horror movie, and the characters(especially the children) are weirdly casual throughout nearly the entire film, even after experiencing what should be extremely traumatizing events. It can be very off putting and definitely takes away a bit of the emersion. Secondly, the premise of the film, despite being excellent, isn't fully realized, and leaves quite a few plot holes behind. Now, admittedly, the film is certainly meant to be largely symbolic, so plot holes aren't the worst thing in the world, however the story does feel quite grounded so it does take away from the emersion once again. Overall though, a very enjoyable film with a few flaws that I think being it down from being the masterpiece it could have been.
Baki is absolutely insane in the best way possible. If you are looking for a show with interesting ideas and themes, or deep messages, or heck, even a show that makes sense, Baki is not the show for you. Essentially the creator of Baki has done something never before seen in history. He has thrown out everything in an attempt to make the most enjoyable show possible. Nothing in the show makes sense, and anything and everything can be thrown out at any time if it makes for a more fun scene. It really is a show where you have to buy into the logic of the world in order to enjoy it, and if you do, you won't be disappointed. Amazing fights, badass characters, and absolutely hilarious comedy combine to make Baki one of the most insane, wacky, supremely fun shows of all time. If you're looking for a good time, this is it.
After a somewhat slow start to the season, the boys picks up with one of the best episodes to date. Nearly every character is given their own time to shine, each in their own unique plot lines. Even though the show is splitting its attention between nearly 15 characters, the pacing is absolutely immaculate! Nothing feels rushed whatsoever, and the episode is not afraid to take its time for certain scenes. Every plotline is simply fantastic this episode. Homelander has one of his best episodes ever, Butcher is excellent as always, Hughie and Kimiko have an amazing team up, Starlight and Firecracker's beef escalates to an insane degree, Frenchie has an excellent conclusion to his plotline this season, and even characters like Ashley, A-Train, and the Deep get their time to shine. The episode is also filled with absolutely wild twists in it that could potentially change everything for the boys. It is absolutely an episode that will keep you glued to your seat. Diabolical!
